I hope you mean you installed it thru System > Administration > Hardware Drivers
I tried the Synaptic route and ended up with the installed but not active message in Hardware Drives afterwards. But I think I was still beating by head against the -22 kernel at that point.
Hope it works for you if you did it thru synaptic. I know how irritating it is. Gotta have those wobbly windows. ;)

Glad to hear it. Now they have the 2.6.32-22 kernel in the updates for 32 bit and it messed up one of my machines.
No more extra effects. I'm trying to follow BW's guide for using nouveau for that one but I'm hung up at step 7 right now. Looking to sort that out. :x Love alternatives just the same
The guide is here: http://www.ultimateeditionoz.com/forum/ ... f=23&t=574

My best alternative was pulling the nVidia card and hooking up the built in ATI chip the pc came with that I had forgotten all about. That was sooooo much easier. Only if I could just change it in the 2 laptops that have nVidia.

Now I just need to find someone to buy these 2 nVidia pci cards I have... They're GeForce MX 420 and MX 440 so nothing special and I've had them for years I guess I got my use out of them. ;)

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module ‘nvidia.ko’. This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or NVIDIA GPU installed in this system is not supported by this NVIDIA Linux graphics driver release.

To fix the above error message use the following procedure

1) Download Newest Nvidia drivers from here:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index5.aspx?lang=en-us

2) Open module blacklist as admin:

Code: Select all
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Add these lines and save:

blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivatv

3) Uninstall any previously installed Nvidia drivers:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*

4) Reboot your computer

5) When an error message pops up saying that Ubuntu cannot load Nvidia drivers, choose Exit to terminal (Exit to console)

6) Login and cd to the directory where you saved your file

7)Install drivers

Code: Select all
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run

8)Start GDM

Code: Select all
sudo service gdm start

The simplest solution to the kernal issue seems to me to stick .21 until .23 comes around.

Phew..! Got it solved, but required lots of trying and googleing.. None of the methods mentioned here was doing the trick, but a mix of those all.. :D Hope they got it fixed in next kernel.
