tried that, most of these answers come from linux PRO's to linux average users which i am not. I am a newbie who needs step by step instructions starting from (where terminal is located/how to login/ and all other command i'd have to execute found from those posts return by google search result)
i also learned about those codes recently, turns out you dont need a virus to mess up linux, you just need to post the right command for the right problem and who ever uses this code is going bye bye linux :?

lol...yep.

But you know...you can do the same with M$. ;)

http://www.techtutorials.info/lcommands.html

http://www.pixelbeat.org/cmdline.html

http://www.google.com/search?q=list+of+ ... =firefox-a

Normally you shouldn't need to use the terminal. So don't think its something you need to know how to do,but its good to know its there if you need it.

Look at it this way...A Linux os is evolving everyday (unlike M$).There are thousands of people who write code for Linux at any given moment...so any one application,or piece of software that your using can,and will be different (for better or worse) each day. This is called the Community....take note that probably 90% of these apps are free. The community is also made up of the likes of you,and me...the users.(no...I don't code).

FREE is the key word....now hardware coders (driver programmers) work for a corporation (mostly). These corporation put a license on their software, and or hardware (drivers, and such). Lets take ummm...ATI.Now ATI's drivers are proprietary (not free, and is under lock, and key). Now ATI is a major manufacture of gpus.If they just gave away their code they would loose money (remember...corporation+proprietary=not free).

Now...M$ is another major corporation.M$ will get their grubby hands into anything if they think they will make money (they will do anything also...) Why do you think just about any pc,or laptop you can buy has M$ installed?

O.k....What am I'm getting at your asking.

Linux...Where did it come from? And why? Ill post a link that I think explains it pretty good.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/rhasan/linux/

You see Linux is still very young, but a person can do more with nix than with any other "pay" operating system. When you use M$ what you see is what you get.True theres nothing wrong with that some people are happy with that. Some people want more "freedom".They want to be able to write new code (without breaking a license),want everyone (the community) to be able to use it for...FREE.

Its a little known fact that items we use everyday run on nix...Do you use a ATM machine?Even some of the simplest things we have in our homes.

So...back to ATI (I'm not using ATI for any specific reason).Being that ATI is a corporation it can not afford to let their code be leaked,or giving away....but theres a problem. There are more users using Linux today. If they don't cater to ATI linux users then they would loose money(people would just buy Nvidia). So what do they do?Not wanting to loose money, and seeing Linux is not just a "fad" they "give Linux coders "bits " of their drivers....just enough to make it work...give or take.Hence the reason why have crappy performance with the fglrx driver (the ati driver from synaptics).Or the driver you can download from their web site (take heed nvidia is the same way,but generally gives better support for linux than ATI.

So...what how does the Linux coders make it work when they don't have access to proprietary(non free) drivers? They code their own...slowly,and with some help (the bits that they are given from the corporations).

This why I said LInux is evolving everyday...and it literally is.Now don't get me wrong...I'm not some fanboy.I use M$ also.About 10% of the time...some games just won't work in Linux (remember the bit about corporation, and money?)

Why are you tell me this? You might be asking.Well....I'm trying to explain that Nix isn't windows.Maybe you might appreciate Nix more if you new the history, and a little incite on how it works.Maybe if you knew you can do anything you want to (if you knew how,but that takes time with anything thats new) with nix.If your a coder you pretty much do what you want without a lawyer knocking on your door from some corporation.

You can even change Ultimate Edition if you wanted to ( http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html ).

Course this all means nothing if "it just doesn't work".The thing is you can help "it work" buy submitting bug reports/testing....this is where the user is important to the "community".
Where M$ can dish out the cash to a manufacture (or even buy them out) to get "drivers",and such....The Linux community can't.

Course some don't contribute at all,and just use the os as it is......nothing wrong with that.It is free.If they don't like what they are using...well they don't have to use it at all (generally speaking here).

Cool man.I know I didn't answer any of your questions...but maybe what I wrote will put some questions you "might" have in perspective.

Cheers

i know why ATI does not want to give away their code, its because most of ATI video cards can be turned into FireGL cards
Those cost double of not triple for performance they deliver for 3d artist.
I did that my self one time, it only takes right driver to be pushed into your system and let card think its fireGL now :)

If source is released, all linux users will turn their cards into FireGL in no time and thats way to much money loss

I defend ATI for stability and years of no problems using it. Nvidia on the other hand is not protecting its code as much because its such crap it dont need to be protected "Nvidia is the way is meant to play"
For me and every single computer i had, Nvidia meant one thing= "CRASH" it would crash many games and programs.
Solution ? Game profiles come with Nvidia driver control panel LOL  Then there is that SLI ? had two cards 100% identical, somethign went wrong and no more SLI, perform better as single's. pretty sure linux users have enough issues with Nvidia even if it provides support

and thanks for linux Info, i really appreciate it.
FYI i really want to switch to ubuntu ASAP but not unless i get my video card working, for that i still need to get one more HDD so i can finaly learn how linux installation works. Every time i try the outcome is different :( lol so i still need few more times to master ubuntu setup.

Its ok, ill wait till i get my self separate hard drive to mess with, installation would be easier then :D

and it does, i have never had any crashes with ATI cards regardless of what games i played or what 3D applications i used including video editing. Nvidia on the other hand did nothing else but overheat and crash my system. I had assembled around 10 computers for me and my friends and from personal experience i found that ATI is the least troubled one when it comes to Windows. Even hacking ATI cards is easier then Nvidias :)
Thank you guys for trying to help, i needed it.

By the way, does anyone know if there is any official new version of linux on which new ubuntu will be built coming anytime soon ?
I mean like Linux 10 or 11 or where ever you guys are at right now caz for all i know ubuntu is still 9.10 or something like that right ?

Hello ADPdirty ! <BREW> :D Long time no see ! I hope you have come further on Graphics issues since last we saw you ! YES, 10.4 "Lucid Linux" will be out sometime in April, As will Ultimate Edition 2.6 (To my knowledge ;) ) It will sport a new boot up interface featuring "Plymouth" splash, and it promises a faster boot and all-around faster response time,TheeMahn and the team are currently working on the new release of Ultimate Edition,This is gonna be the coolest Ultimate Edition to date ! :D But then I do admit I have a biased opinion ! I don't have any answers on you next question about the Graphics drivers ! But I can assure you if this issue can be addressed Theemahn will see to it ! (As he also runs ATI) ! (As do I, .... for now!) Great to hear from you hope you are doing well,Post again soon !! :D

Took me a while to respond to your last post. I was waiting for new release and waited long enough so that 2.7 came out
I still have exact same issue with my HD TV
Ubuntu thinks its 50" when in fact its 47" so that image is overscaled and i cant see menus on the screen that are on top.
Also unable to set maximum screen resolution to 1920x1080 maybe due to HDTV ?
My computer connected to my Visio Galevia 47" or as Windows 7 says "GV47L" via HDMI cable.
My card is still ATI HD 3870 X2
Yes i know linux and ATI not friends

Is there anything i can do (that linux noob can figure out as i am one) to fix this ?

I have not installed 2.7 yet, i only tried live and downloaded latest driver which had no effect at all.
I also noticed when changing resolution i get this sound power up effect. As if you have plugged your speaker to an outlet for 0.1 second. Its loud and nasty and i know it hurts your speakers due to hard impact and lots of voltage going through.

Thanks for reply :) Hope to hear one soon
