duel boot up

Postby frostybear » Tue Mar 02, 2010 8:57 am

hey all ,as i only started recently with linux i am going to post alot, hope i dont irritate u too much.i had win ms 7 (rc1)on my pc and then installed UE2.4 on as well and it created its own partition.i had no problems booting up in both WIN and Ultimate Edition. So when the rc1 expired i formated that partition in Ultimate Edition.in order to play my games i installed xp on the partition, but when i boot up now it goes straight to windows and does not give me the option to choose from which to boot.when i insert Ultimate Edition disk and choose to boot up from it ,it starts the installation again.how do i get the grub back or do i format everything and start afresh. :(

frostybear,

First of all, WELCOME to Ultimate Edition!! Glad to see ya here! :D
I had the exact same problem with WIN7RC on my Shop system (see my Sig below for system specs - it's a good idea to have you specs in a Signature file for more accurate assistance. You can create a signature in the User Control Panel - the link is at the top of all forum pages here.)

I see from your Post that you are using Ultimate Edition 2.4. The following is for that version and older versions.

How to restore the Ubuntu grub bootloader (9.04 and older)

So, lets begin. To restore the grub, you must boot off the Ultimate Edition Live CD. Any Ultimate Edition 2.4 (or older) or Ubuntu 9.04 (or older) Live CD will do.

Once there, open a terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal) and type this:

1:
Code: Select all
sudo grub

2:
Code: Select all
find /boot/grub/stage1

Take note of what it returns (something like (hd0,1).)

3:
Code: Select all
root (hd<a>,<b>)

Replacing <a> and <b> with what you got back before. For example, if "find
/boot/grub/stage1" gave me "(hd0,1)", you would run "root (hd0,1)"

Ok, so that's the configuration over and done with. Now we just need to run one command to install the Grub to your hard drive:

4:
Code: Select all
setup (hd0)

5:
Code: Select all
quit

6:
Code: Select all
sudo reboot

That should take care of your problem with grub. Please Post back with the results or any further problems. We are here to help you and make your Ultimate Edition experience a good one! <BREW> <BREW>

2.4 is based off of karmic right?

With any Karmic based OS you should be able to just pop the live disk in and update grub with it,or install grub on the first hd.

Let us know how it goes.
