2nd hard drive installation

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.4

2nd hard drive installation

Postby jnalli » Thu Nov 26, 2009 2:33 pm

i am trying to install 2.4 on a separate second hard drive with Vista on the first hard drive the but the installation doesn't recognize the second hard drive. It also won't give me the option of installing alongside Vista either. It wants to erase the whole hard drive that has Vista on it. When i launch qparted from the live cd it sees the second hard drive but the installer doesn't see it. What am I doing wrong?

Hello,
I am no expert on this but before you try again to install Ultimate Edition, you should remove any programs/files you don't really need and then defrag the Vista OS, if you haven't already done so. Try unmounting the 2nd HD and see if the installer will see and allow you to dual boot. Also what is the 2nd HD; IDE, SATA, used-formatted or unformatted and if formatted by what program and how, internal, external, USB, Firewire??

it's a SATA hard drive. I even removed the connection to the first hard drive that has Vista on and only kept the second one plugged in and the installer still didn't see it. It doesn't make sense because Gparted sees it at the same time but the installer doesn't. That's just wierd. I ended up installing Elive on the second hard drive but I don't GRUB.

Hello jnalli.

Maybe what you should have done was to just format the hard disk to EXT3/EXT4 ect with Gparted and the run the installation. Maybe that would have helped. I am thinking it was filesystem problem why the installation wasn't seeing it.

Heres an alternate method that maybe could have solved your problem. I ran into it on the forum.

Hello, Just curious, do you have another computer to connect that HD too, and do you have the same problems?
Does Vista see that 2nd HD? Maybe that HD is defective in some way...I had some similiar problems in the past and I reformatted the ext drive from a MAC computer and Linux could see and use that HD then. Maybe the USB is the problem, the connectors are loose, or cable is bad, just trying to give suggestions, just don't assume everything is working, all the time. I have had cables that have had a broken wire in it somewhere, it would work one time but then the next time I couldn't use my printer. I tried a different cable and the printer worked every time from then on.

Funny you should mention this...I had trouble with an karmic alpha seeing my drive.Turned out that after a few years of swapping drives the cable broke...Damn thing was driving me nuts.If you think this is the case then go into your bios.If the bios doesn't see your drive then its a hardware issue.

Bios sees it and as I've mentioned before gparted sees it with the livecd. Just not the installer. I ended up installing Elive on it so I know it's not the hardware. Is there anyway to install GRUB for Elive and Vista? They are on two separate hard drives. I tried installing Elive on separate computer that has Ultimate Edition 2.4 on it but I was getting a Busybox error when tried to boot up EliveCD.
