If you can't get to the grub list, and if there is a grub prompt when you see the error you can try to run
Code: Select all
update-grub

Tho this command is going to change soon,it might still work.

Might be relevant...
Flash-forward to Karmic Koala, and it recognized my fake-RAID just fine. It even installed on my RAID 0 without a hitch until I rebooted. I could never boot the system entirely (Got a white logo, pressed enter and was stuck at the "initramfs" prompt).

The LiveCD would only recognize the RAID, and wouldn't allow me to install on single drives. The alternate installer CD would allow me to bypass the RAID, but installations on single drives still wouldn't boot. They'd install fine, but not boot. Of course using the alternate installer for software RAIDs wouldn't work either.

In the end, it was the simplest of things...I still had my SATA running in "IDE" mode in my BIOS. I flipped that back to "RAID", and installed again with the LiveCD. Koala saw my RAID once more, installed, and this time booted just fine.

So there is was for me. Koala detected the fake-RAID even though my BIOS wasn't set to use it. I know more than a few PCs with SATA drives that are set to IDE mode rather than RAID mode...especially computers with single drives only. Fake-RAIDs are becoming more and more commonplace since SATA became popular. If you have boot issues with Karmic, take a look at your BIOS and see if you can't configure your SATA devices differently.

I've seen crazier things happening before...

Also make sure
Code: Select all
fdisk -l
list your RAID partitions (if any) from the live disk.If it doesn't,but the installer see's them then something is fishy...so to speak.

Having an issue installing it on my system, I have installed 9.10 few times with no problem, but when trying to install 2.4, it get all the way through till it configues the boot loader and crashes every time. I have 2 X raid 0 arrays first with windows 7, second the one i'm trying to install 2.4 onto. it does see the arrays, but it for some reason won't finish the install. when i reboot, i get a grub error 15, i did try doing the update from the live cd as mentioned, but get grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /.
Any idears on this please

Maybe this will help.

I have not installed yet but this like the best place for this
OK, dling now. ? I tried ubuntu 9.10 and did not like ! I assume it is exactly the same with Ultimate Edition 2.4 ?
The reason I ask is because Ultimate Edition 2.3 is just the layout/easy to use Linux I want and ubuntu 9.10 changed to many things to my mind that were not well thought out or not ready for that build. If the layout/look are the same as 2.3 I will install.Which brings me to the next ?
Seeing that I have 2.3 set up to my taste and extra programs that I use, when I do the install, I assume that I can use the upgrade option and that way leave
my /usr /var /home untouched except for the new Ultimate Edition 2.4 stuff
I had been a Mandriva user for years but early this year they broke my system with the nvidia update and have been with Ultimate Edition since.I have it running on VmPlayer on the XP side and is how I got to know and like it
Thanks !

You can try the live 2.4 disk, and see if you will like it.

I don't recommend upgrading from 2.2.If you decide to... back up everything...Use unetbootin to make a live disk of your system. http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ (doesn't save all configurations, but will have all the apps you installed.)

If you decide to upgrade then make a copy of your xorg.conf file, and save it.then delete the file on your 2.2 install.

something to help make your mind up... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305924

EDIT: just noticed this..

Tell ya the truth I never upgraded an os in a virtual system. You don't have to worry about the xorg bit I suggested.I'm almost sure unetbootin will still work-if you can mount an usb stick, and you have enough room for it to make the iso of you os.

Ok, I burnt the iso/put it in the laptop that is running Ultimate Edition 2.3/rebooted/choose boot in safe mode.and all I got was a console prompt ?Rebooted/choise boot/install and that works.Am testing on the lappy to see what I think of it.
One of the main reason that drew me to Ultimate Edition was that I had 2.1 installed on VmPlayer and 1 day while I was using it, a update window popped up and said there was an update and I said ok and it did it with no problems ! I run several other distros on VmPlayer and NONE of them ever did that ! Very special

I'm sure you can but why risk another variable?Eject it.

I'm not sure I'm reading you right. You want to try to upgrade you virtual install of 2.2 right? If so open the backports in synaptics, and upgrade away.

If your going to just install 2.4 in the virtual system then just install normally...like you did with 2.2

no its not. Also I believe just upgrading 2.3 through synaptics will get you an ubuntu 9.10 install....not an Ultimate Edition 2.4.

Hi , As always a fresh install is the only way to go,I recommend backing up your home folder, bookmarks and any other important documents and info. And install a fresh Ultimate Edition 2.4. There are numerous threads on this matter from previous releases, Ultimate Edition from one release to the next is a new beast each time ,And with 2.4 being built on Karmic 9.10, and having some different things in it all together you would be cheating yourself by doing it any other way ! TheeMahn and the crew have worked tirelessly on this new build and should prove to be the most Ultimate Ultimate Edition to date ! Don't cheat your self !! ;) search the threads and you will see by the answers given what I mean! :ugeek:
