Sound issues?Post here please.-[Guide for you]

I posted this in the 2.2 thread,but I've read it works in karmic too(2.4).It also seemed to get skype playing nice with pulse...but your mileage might vary.

Do at your own risk!!!

1. Backup (and then delete) your previous configuration files:

Code: Select all
$ mkdir ~/pulse-backup && cp -r ~/.pulse ~/.asound* /etc/asound.conf /etc/pulse -t ~/pulse-backup/
$ rm -r ~/.pulse ~/.asound*
$ sudo rm /etc/asound.conf

Warning: As always, use caution when removing files on your system. Any typos can potentially cause data loss.
Note: Don't worry if some of these files did not exist on your system.

2. Ensure you have the necessary PulseAudio libraries and configuration utilities installed:

Code: Select all
 $ sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins padevchooser libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio

3. Get rid of this. "libflashsupport":

Code: Select all
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge libflashsupport flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound

Note: the libflashsupport library was (and to a certain extent, still is) the most common cause of Firefox instability since the Hardy release, because many users have been misled into thinking they must install it to ensure Flash & PulseAudio can work correctly. If you notice any postings that recommend this library to be installed,Tell them they are full of...well you know ;)

4. Open System/Preferences/Sound. In the Devices section, ensure that all "Sound playback" options are set to Autodetect. Set the "Sound capture" item to "ALSA", or the appropriate hardware definition. Close the application when you're finished.

Note: Choosing PulseAudio for sound capture may result in crashes, so you are advised to choose the "direct" ALSA device instead

5. Open the PulseAudio Volume Control application ("pavucontrol", or you can launch "Applications/Sound & Video/PulseAudio Device Chooser" and select Volume Control from this applet's menu). In the Output Devices section you will see a listing of the playback devices available on your system. Right-click on the entry that you desire to be made the default playback device on your system and enable the "Default" checkmark. Similarly, navigate to Input Devices, then right-click on the device you wish to set as your default input device (microphone), and ensure the "Default" setting is checked. Close the application when you're finished.

Note: If you are greeted with the error "Connection failed: Connection refused", manually launch PulseAudio before opening the PulseAudio Volume Control application:

Code: Select all
$ pulseaudio & pavucontrol

6. Ensure that your sound card's PCM mixer is not muted or set to 0% volume (this appears to be a common bug in Intrepid and Jaunty.Haven't seen it in Karmic yet):

Code: Select all
$ alsamixer -Dhw

Note: When the PulseAudio ALSA plugins are active, you must explicitly specify your hardware device in alsamixer (marked in blue above), otherwise it will open the PulseAudio mixer.

you're finished - log out and back in for changes to take effect!

Should work peachy.

Actually I'm getting this bug with Karmic also.(on a clean install)

Pulse Audio+Alsa Together on the same session

If you play games,and are having problems with the sound,or the game crashing install this.
Code: Select all
 sudo apt-get install libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio

It will get rid of the alsa version of libsdl1.2debian,but your games will run better.

Pulse Audio rears its ugly head......again

Having only discovered Ultimate Edition a few weeks back (thanks in large part to Moebius who got me through the Nvidia driver mess).....I just installed 2.4 (which sees and deals with the 185 Nvidia driver issue by default, congrats). Thought I could not be more pleased with 2.2,---- 2.4 is a appreciable step forward.

I have only one problem with 2.4 on the Zotac computer and that is no sound, none whatsoever, whereas I had sound (less Skype) in 2.2??

Having spent the past 2 days trying to get sound and reading through the volumes on the various forums (especially the 1000's of input on the Ubuntu forum) at "fixes".....in my particular case with two recent release mini-itx computers, the sound problem seems directly related to PulseAudio.

For those interested in the damage PulseAudio can cause: http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2009/04/21/ubuntu-904-jaunty-keeping-the-beast-pulseaudio-at-bay/.....an amazing read, if you will.

In the end, I removed PulseAudio and walla! the return of sound, like flipping a switch. I hesitated to do it because I really don't know what I am doing, was cautioned by Cell on removing anything in an OS and figured Theemann must have included PulseAudio for some reason. But I could no longer tolerate this great OS in front of me with no sound. Kind of like bringing home that large screen TV you have always wanted, great picture, no sound.

Not being technical at all ( I do well just to turn the damned computer on in the first place) I am astounded that a program such as PulseAudio, with known incompatibilities even exists in the world of Linux and I would hope some disgusted developer out there will eventually come up with an alternative to this flawed resource.

None of this should be taken as a slight to Ultimate Edition as the problem lies, I believe, in Karmic, 9.10 as I installed that OS a couple of weeks back (trial)---exact same results, plus Ubuntu 9.10 has changed the sound configuration making it even harder to work around PulseAudio. Finally, with 2.4, I gave up and just removed the damned thing...PA. (and installed, per multiple suggestions from "fixes": esound)

Only strange thing is: I have sound with only one program: Amarok. (it would seem all the other players have some dependency on PA?) And, of course, in removing PA, you lose your volume control and sound configuration under "Preferences"....a small price to pay to get the full enjoyment potential of 2.4.

I fully realize this is probably an esoteric problem to only a select grouping of computers and could possibly have something to do with 64Bit vs 32 as in my study of the various forums, it seems PA is more problematic with 64Bit....don't know, don't really care, just want sound (finally got it) and would hope someone, somewhere, someday will rid us of this terrible PulseAudio.

Hello Vincente.

First I will say that on U.E 2.4 you can work with 2 Mixer on the same session :o
Pulse Audio +Alsa Mixer!!

I have post the solution for it on the Forum,and with this option you get the volume 2 times higher!!
you can work with the Pulse Audio Device Chooser:

2

And with Alsa Mixer from the other hand:

with both Mixer's you have more options to cover all the software to work for you with no problems ;)
