Ubuntu adware problem?

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.3

Ubuntu adware problem?

Postby Formido » Mon Aug 25, 2014 9:30 pm

I have been seeing disturbing rumors regarding adware/spyware in Ubuntu; specifically in regards to UbuntuOne, Unity, apport, & zeitgeist. Since Ultimate Edition uses Ubuntu components, I wanted to confirm that these problems do not affect my Ultimate Edition 2.3. So far as I can tell, it only relates to more recent releases of Ubuntu, but I'm only guessing, so is Ultimate Edition 2.3 safe?

I had an answer..but

2.3

You don't even have the Unity interface that this is talking about, you may have the plugin with compiz(you could downgrade compiz to remove if it is there), but not exactly the same thing.

Safe

Hmm..the answer is no...but

Is any Open Source...safe? You could always go to the NSA site and get some helpful guides on setting up security soooo no.

Windows? hahahahahahahahaha

Apple? No...just no.

Is Unity overly intrusive and kind of annoying? Definitely....but you don't have the Unity they are referencing. So these problems do not technically affect Ultimate Edition 2.3.

You do need to upgrade openssl.

There is a security section on this forum as well.

It is more a user aspect than a software aspect. There are ways to make Unity not so intrusive but none of that applies to 2.3. Unity for you is a compiz plugin on Gnome 2, not a DE for Ubuntu.

And now, the completely true facts, as told by an anonymous man hiding behind a screen name:

Packard Bell Pack Mate II 286 Intel 80286 1MB RAM

No Unity is good news! I'll stick to the KDE. Anyway to know for sure if UE2.3 has the nasty compiz version? And what about UbuntuOne, apport, & zeitgeist? Preliminary research seems to suggest UbuntuOne is recent junk (not sure though), but Google is not cooperating with apport and zeitgeist. Thanks for your advice!
