Why GUI in each version of Ultimate Edition fail on my PC?But Karmic works

Postby szaemon » Sun Oct 18, 2009 1:29 am

The sublect line doesn't allow for a title as long as I would like to type, the proper title of thread/help request should be:

Why does the GUI in every version of Ultimate Edition and Ubuntu except Karmic fail to run correctly on my PC? Note I am not referring to the PC in my signature.

The Computer

This is a refurbished NEC MatePC-MY30VFEET. There is no Graphics Card and according to the store that sold it to me, I can't install one. Instead it is a Chip Set

Intel 945g Express Chip Set

The Story So Far

I have explored this problem in another post titled Instalation freeze on NEC Mate MY0V/FE-1. The result was Amir's suggestion of trying out Karmic to see if it would work and it did. I am still working on getting that working properly though. But, as you kwon, Karmic is not quite ready for prome time yet, and although it plays well with my monitor, it is still unstable. Cell suggested I switch back to Ultimate Edition, so I'm exploring both options right now. If you wish to read that thread here is the link:

http://www.forumubuntusoftware.info/vie ... =43&t=3837

My intial ID of my computer in that post (MY0V/FE-1)was incorrect. After reburbishing it, it was given that as a new ID number. The correct ID is MY30VFEET.

I am very ignorant of computers and thick headed when it comes to learning new information about them. So please speak in Newb terms if you decide to offer me help.

Cell clued me into the idea of checking the checksum which I hadn't tried because I didn't know anything about it and I was confident in those coppies as I have had them on other systems without trouble. Thank You Cell. I have checked them, they're fine.

I think there might be something about the way Karmic interacts with my monitor that let's GNOME function wothout a problem.

THE PROBLEM

When I Load the Live CD of any Version of Ultimate Edition up to 1.9 it loads up fine then after the installation is complete and I would expect to see the Ultimate's familiar dark screen, it gets a bit to dark. The blinking cursor at the top left disappears and then the whole screen goes black.

WhenI Load the Live CD of Ultimate Edition 2.0 to 2.3 it gives me a bunch of choppy, flashing colors for a while, then settles on a pinkish blue lined screen. I know the Live CD is being read and loaded because the program responds properly on shutdown: push the shutdown button and a grayish white box appears, hit enter and the system logs off, then I see the clearly presented shutdown screen along with instructions to take out my CD and hit enter.

Ultimate Edition 2.3 rsponds the best, with no chopy flashing colors. It just loads up properly and sttles on a screen full of vertical multi-colored lines. Even my mouse is present, represented as 6 inch long, half inch wide block of white that appears intermitently as I try to move the cursor.

My question:
Can you (and if so How) take Karmic's ability to properly instal and run GNOME on my computer and marry it with Ultimate Edition 2.3? Not being very computer knowledgable, I'm not sure what would be needed, but perhaps just the viedo drivers from Karmic are different. Can I get them on a disk and put them in at some point in the installation of Ultimate Edition?

If someone can think of another thing that might work with this problem, please let me know.

Thanks for any help offered here!

Thanks for the quick response Cell, I wish I could say your words filled me with hope and optimism...
So is it likely that my computer simply cannot use any current version of Ultimate Edition? I find that hard to believe, but if the newer kernel in Karmic is the difference that allows my computer to function, I guess I'm out of luck with Ultimate Edition... at least for the time being.

Do you have any suggestion as to how I can get Ultimate Edition functioning properly on my computer?

Thanks Amir, but doesn't this require the computer to be on the internet to make use of it? Since the computer still can't get online. I can't do anything with this. Or can I?

Got it. Thanks

You know, I wonder if another version of Linux would help me just to get online. I hate that I have to pay for an internet cafe or wait till I get home to communicate online when I'm paying for a connection in my office...grrr...

szaemon

I can tell you now after all the process was done by me,
The Drivers and the kernel have solved the issue of the network and the Video cards.
and with the upgrade to kernel 2.6.31.14 it work just fine for me here.
Intel cards gut the fix for the bugs,Nvidia the same, and ATI the same.
