general hardware ?'s

Postby tchk » Sun Sep 27, 2009 3:07 am

this may not be the proper place to post this but everyone here has been so helpfull to this point so i'll give it a shot.
so i recently got some new hardware and i wanted to see what kind of input everyone had on it as far as configuration and setup goes. or if i made the right decision which i already feel i didn't. i can't believe i bought an ati card

old hardware new hardware

video card

xfx nvidia 7900 gs xfx ati radeon hd 4650

i couldnt find xfx specific specs apparently it's a big secret or something

stock amd athlon x2 thermaltake black widow cl-p0401

ram

1x1gb 800 mhz gskill 2x2gb 800 mhz corsair
(corsair gaming memory?) whatever that means

one major question i have is about the 1gb stick of ram. i probably don't want to run that even though it's the same speed as the rest of my ram, correct? second is video card comparison because i dont really know much about ati or exactly what all these specs mean.
video card comparison.png
video card comparison
third is i searched for hours now and i can't get a definitive answer on whether or not my asus m2n-sli deluxe motherboard supports 1066 mhz or not, at asus it says 800 mhz but at other forums overclock.net and others it says 1066mhz is the max freq. i have about 175$ $ us to buy a graphics card if any one has a better suggestion than the one i got. also i tested the cpu cooler and my cpu runs about 10 degrees cooler :D sry for the long post i'm not really up on the hardware anymore

Hi tchk,
Personal view only here:
Nvidia is always my choice, for no other reason than stability and ease of use with Ultimate Edition I'm not a gamer nor am I one to tweak the max out of my system, I just want reliability. ;)

One link as a review/specs: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/384/1/

Intel is my preference with CPU's. Had one bad experience with AMD and that was it. I went with a Core 2 Duo 8400 - great for overclocking if you do that type of thing (I dont). I wanted compatibility across different O/S's so went with Intel.

Ram: I dont think you will have issues using both - your mainboard should auto detect the lowest performer and switch down to meet its needs.

Surf across to Asus home site and check out what updates are available for your BIOS etc.. There may be an update for memory speed etc..

Sorry for the very quick reply - Have a game to get to and am running late.

Cheers.

To really confuse you.....

Amd,and ATI is what I ever used...never had problems with em. ;) Even used corsair's memory...never will again.Good o'l Kingston is what I use now,and always will use. What you should really be asking about is the power source...Don't go cheap on it,or it will fail, and when it does it really wont matter what os/hardware you were using.

What it boils down to is what you plan on using your box for...

Also use a web seller that has input from buyers, and users of the hardware.

Hello tchk.

download the ATI Catalyst™ 9.3
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/l ... ng=English

then see if that will help you with the ATI performance.

I am a AMD man believe that, if I had a fat wallet and did not care about $ at all an Intel man. The CPU bang for the buck a AMD man. Video I am sorry even though I run ATI Video 2 of them and the ability to run 4 sucks period in our Linux world. I miss NVidia, I will replace my mainboard and video. My mainboard is mackdaddy as specs say, however the ATI issues with video is BS. Sure I run a older video card (which by the way unsupported in nix) do that times 4 and crush NVidia's best card is not the case. I hate ATI period. I may write a post about that lets educate people.

MSI is a POS as well, never again... my next mainboard?

Hi tchk,
Can you be a bit more specific here please?
I can tell you you may have issues if you have already setup your Ultimate Edition system whilst you had your ATI and then dropped in your Nvidia. If you are doing a clean install, once going, use your menus and pop into System - Preferences - Appearance, click on the Visual Appearance tab at the top and choose Extra. This will normally download the latest driver for you automagically and get it going.

Let us know where you´re at. ;)

Finetuch and I viewed Admin / mods this eve, btw finetuch is a admin on http://ultimateedition.info/ he is the only admin there minus me ;) I have removed admin / mods on this board this eve do you see it? Obviously not to you ;)

I see you as an admin here, perhaps if your skills prevail on "MAIN". This is what got him 1/2 a million views a day, none the less it has to be approved by me. When I write a post do I think it will be viewed a million times?
