Can't install Ultimate Edition 2.3 or 2.2 either x86 or x64-[SOLVED]

Postby Huub Mengede » Tue Sep 22, 2009 6:03 am

Hi all,

I have a strange problem. I can't install Ultimate Edition 2.2 or 2.3, both x86 and x64 versions on my main system. :?
I'll tell you what I did.
I downloaded the ISO's and checksummed them. They are ok.
I burned them on DVD. And verivied them. Also no problems detected.

(for your info.) My main goal is to use the the x64 version on my pc. And I can't wait till 2.4 is ready. 8-)

After booting, I can come into the live session. That's no problem. The problems start during the installation.
I have dedicated one 1Tb harddrive for Linux. It has to work in dualboot with M$ Vista/Windows7 Ultimate x64 (*cough*) :o yeah yeah, I know.

Every time I can get to 5%. >> it's formatting and making the ext3.
Then after a while it gives a error message and disappears or it disappears wihout any message. Or It sais that it has problems with the dvd. bla bla dirty burner, errors etc.
This for sure isn't the problem because I have burned like 10-15+ DVD's with these 4 distro's from max speed to 1x speed. (I know I'm crazy. But when I have a problem I'm turfing every single problem out.)

Now, what else I did.
I downloaded Ubuntu 9.04 (x86 and x64) and did everything the same. (but only burned them one time.)
I installed from live session. Installation crashed again at 5% and one time at 10%. (I still don't know why it went on to 10%.)
Rebooted the pc. Then I used the 2nd option on the bootscreen. >>> This option is not available on the Ultimate Edition bootscreen.
The 2nd option allows you to install Ubuntu directly.
And yup. I didn't get any errors. Flawless install. :?:
First I tested it with the x86 version, also installed it the same way on my fathers pc, after that I tried the x64 version. Same thing, installation without any problems.

Only thing I can think of is that there is something activated in the live session that prohibits (on some pc configurations?) that you can install / write partion information to the system. Perhaps a user right's problem?

Anyway. I was (and am) curious if you guys have some ideas.
or perhaps it can be solved by changing some installation parameters?

I realy want to install Ultimate Edition 2.3 / 2.4 on my system.
I also wanna try to run World of Warcraft on it. hehe, I know it can. :ugeek:

Hello Huub Mengede ,

welcome to the U.E Forum and the U.E site.

your problem is with the file system of windows.
you have to create unallocated partition for the installation of the U.E system,
you can't install Linux on windows file system.
so go to download Parted Magic from here and burn it iso on Disc:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3864
after you have burn the Disc change your boot to start from CD/DVD.
then when you come up to the Parted Magic Desktop,
use the partition tool to resize the partition and apply the changes.

I have post some screen shots for the users on the site.
just make 20-30 gig space for the installation in the end of your HDD.
then you will be able to install the system of the Ultimate Edition

Uhm. Perhaps I wasn't clear. or i'm wrong.
Or do you mean that I have to free some space on the 1st HDD SCSI1 (/sda1)?
Shouldn't be neccessary, imho.
---
on 1st HDD SCSI1 (/sda1) is M$ installed. 1 big partition of 1Tb. (NTFS)
2nd HDD SCSI2 (/sdb1 + /sdb2) will be totally for Linux. 22.5Gb for swap (/sdb2), the rest of it will be for /sdb1) << standard setup. Kept both the same on Ubuntu and Ultimate Edition.
on 3rd HDD SCSI3 (/sdc1 + /sdc2) are only drivers and installation files installed. (NTFS)(just removed windows7 a few moments ago.)
---

Strange thing though is that Ubuntu 9.04 doesn't have any problems with the same setup as above, when I activate the install straight from boot. (When i do it from the live session, both stop/crash at around 5%.)
When install is ready I can choose in the Grub bootscreen between Vista and Ubuntu.
yeah, I know. I'm a hardhead.

[Edit}. hmmm w8. I remember something. Wasn't there a issue with more then 4 partitions?

1st of all. Tnx a lot for helping guys.
Tried that proggie. pmagic. nice programm btw.
To be safe I freed 30Gb on 1st HDD SCSI1 and made a partition of it.
Also completly removed any partition on the 2nd HDD.
Rebooted and tried to install Ultimate Edition 2.3 again.
I used the option for using total harddisk space on SCSI2.
But it keeps hanging on the same 5%.
Damn I'm starting to hate this. (mostly out of frustration.)

Edit: grrrr, now i'm pissed. Gonna remove all 3 HDD's and replace them with 2 old DiamondMax Plus 9 - 120Gb platters. (10k rpm onces), I hope they still work. And gonna test on them what happens.

While you're at it - remove all but one of your Ram Chips. Call it a hunch.

Good luck.

Update status:
Removed all HDD's and connected a WD 74Gb 10k HDD.
I didn't manage to install 2.3, but... I got a clear moment. hehe I do have a Ultimate Edition 2.0 x64 dvd.
Put it in, ran install and guess what. Clean installation, no problems!

Next step.
As I want/need multiboot, I attached the other HDD's again. Booted, ran install and guess what...
it stopped installing with an error, once after 59% and the 2 times after 79%.
It gave the good old (dvd) error messages like dirty player, burned to fast, too hot.
I'm getting crazy here.
>> and Yes, I now am on the forum through the live session.

tnx.
gonna try the memory trick next. Hope it works.
after that I'm gonna try the usb method.
I guess there is more than one way to keep me off the streets.
