Installation/Nvidia Graphics Driver Query

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.3

Re: Installation/Nvidia Graphics Driver Query

Guys, thanks again for responses. <BREW>

It's still not working! I know people have got it working from forums around the net, but it's sure not working for me.

Last night i did a clean install which worked perfectly. Then i ran all the updates, restarted and logged in to the gnome environment. All is well.

Then i installed the NVIDIA drivers which say that they have installed successfully. I then restart x with commands and that is where i get the "unable to start x server"?

I've tried installing the drivers different ways but always get the same?

Oh, i can get back in to gnome when i restsrt and revert back.

I'm still searching ubuntu forums for the answers as well.

HELP!

This is what I did to get the drivers to install.
Fresh Install of UU 2.3 x64
Restart Pc
Open Terminal typed
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get upgrade

Then restarted pc
Open Firefox went to http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_185.18.31.html to download my driver (it will download to desktop)
press Ctrl + Alt + F2
entered user ID and password
after that I input
Code: Select all
cd Desktop

Code: Select all
sudo killall gdm

Code: Select all
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.31-pkg2.run
Tip: If you input sudo sh N then press the tab key it will auto complete the rest of file name for you.
Follow the instructions I hit yes for everything. I did not get any errors at all. Once that was done.
I typed
Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

and I was back at the gui
then i went to System-Preferences-NVIDIA X SERVER Settings and drag to desktop right click on icon then goto Permissions and tick Allow executing file as program

DarkChild I totally agree... I am not a linux guru like you I am a total noob when it comes to code and this environment. I posted this to show people step by step. I followed your tutorial and a tutorial from the linuxcrypt and after like 3 failures this is what worked for me.

Here we go again!
I have tried all the above and numerous other ways, but still no joy.

I recently found out that it may be the BUSid, so i ran:

lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 9600M GT (rev a1)

I then edited the xorg.conf file with:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BusID "01:00.0"

added the busid bit.

I saved the config file and restarted, but it still failed???

Am i ever going to use Ultimate Edition 2.3 in all it's glory? Just canae seem to solve this one.

Hello gismoid

from your output I can see that the section of the accelerate the 3D
is not properly FIX
If you look on my Guide for the Intel cards you will see that I have fix that part
anyway after the process you will have the 3 drivers update for
Intel,ATI,Nvidia
