Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.2

Upgrading from 2.2 to 2.3, 2.4. or 2.5

Postby marty6 » Fri Dec 04, 2009 6:04 pm

Hi,

I have been using UU 2.2 for a while now and would like to keep any and all files and programs downloaded while trying to upgrade to the latest UU edition? Is this possible, and if so, how? I saw the video for 2.5 and thought that and upgrade would be nice to do. Any and all help is appreciated.

Hello marty6.

At this point in time it is not possible to do a system upgrade. The only thing we always suggest is to do a clean installation to be on the safe side in terms of compatibility/preventing packages from becoming broken etc!!

Darkchild is right ! This is the why we say "Backup your data" ! If you use the "Advanced search" you will find many posts on this subject, And as you become more accustom to Ultimate Edition ( or any LINUX distro) You find That this is NOT! windows, You will find that installing a new version of Ultimate Edition is like gaining another friend ! You first have to un-learn the image of a... "This is all there is" attitude and realize there is a whole "NEW" world out there ! Once you gather all the "backups" as in installation packages and bookmarks and how to's ( of which there are many) And keep that in a special place, This will then be YOUR operating system! And installing a new bright and shinning new version of Ultimate Edition will be like a new day dawning ! You see Ultimate Edition (as great as it is) is only A shell....! YOU.. make Ultimate Edition what ..YOU! ...want it to be ! ... TheeMahn 8-) :ugeek: Just gives you the best starting ground from which to work! Yes I know you want Immediate gratification and so you will ! Given time !(oxymoron) Because it is a learning process! you must first learn to UN-learn, but yet remember!(And Believe me there is a lot to remember !) But the human experience is one that has a quest for knowledge! Don't let the little things overwhelm you ! Learn that your back-up IS YOUR operating system ! , and from "YOUR" "live" Ultimate Edition DVD (or other live LINUX disk) You may gain access to any place on your hard drive ! (Lets see makeusoft abble do that!) Fear not my friend ............LINUX WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN ! (no matter what arch. you run! ) And with ULTIMATE EDITION leading the the way, YOU! (WE!) Will be on the cutting edge of new horizons, In summation : Backup, Go forward, Fear not ! Backup backup BACKUP !!!!! THEN move forward!! :ugeek: ;)

Thank you for the replies. I'll make a full backup of my home folder. I did use remastersys and made an iso of my OS back in June. I'll do it again. Is there a way to find out what has been downloaded and installed on my current version of UU? I would like to make a text file and save it to my home folder. So, when I finally dl UU2.5, I can install / upgrade to newer versions of those programs.

Thank you,

marty6

Go to "Applications --> Add/Remove Applications" and select the drop down arrow and select installed application only. Doing that will populate a list of all the installed apps etc!! Hope that helped ;)

DarkChild,

After I get the populated list, can I use it in UU2.5? If so, 1) where do I place this file, and 2) what do I need to do in order to install those programs from that list?

Thank you,

marty6

In the mention method above you would of to go through the list and make a note of the installed applications so that when you reinstall you can always install what needs to be installed because then you would have an idea of what was installed!! Its alot of work so maybe you would want to use a program like "APTonCD" to backup your installed debs or use the method JOHNNYG posted!!
