Bought a laptop and first thing I did [Solved]

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.2

Bought a laptop and first thing I did [Solved]

Postby himtuna » Mon Jun 29, 2009 11:52 am

and the first thing I did was to install Ultimate 2.2 64bits.
It installed like a breeze :) pretty experienced now on "How to install without loosing partitions :D "
After install I updated and run the EnvyNG to install the ati drivers. ah! before that, I was pretty surprised to see ubuntu in full resolution without drivers...no 640x400.You people are hardworking.!
After installing the drivers and the second thing I did is to come here and cry like a child.

I got two issues
>My laptop wont shutdown. ( I tried shutdowning with live CD, before installing updates , ati driver, after installing updates, ati drivers.) But it wont shutdown at any cost
>ATI drivers not working, I cant see beryl in action. ( I went to system tools>compiz fusion icon> clicked here and there.... but nothing happened :(

Please let me what to do now?

Configuration:
Dell studio 15
Processor: P8600 2.4 Ghz
Graphics Card: 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
Ram: 4 Gb
HDD: 320 Gb

The sad part of this story is that you most likely had to support microsoft because their os came preinstalled.
CPU: Pentium 4 3Ghz
Chieftec Dragon case(old alienware style)
Mainboard : MSI MS-7028
Ram: 2GB
HDD: Samsung 160GB 7200rpm SATA
Optical Drive: Samsung DVD-RW

Hello himtuna.

Try downloading & installing the ATI drivers from the provided link below. As for your shutdown problem, there is a post link below linking you to a laptop with a similar shutdown problem which was solved!! Please visit the link below.

ATI Radeon Linux Display Drivers 9.6

http://download.softpedia.ro/dl/1c36a9edfbcabf87972baf454725c71f/4a4569a6/500006719/linux/ati-driver-installer-9-6-x86.x86_64.run

App Runner 0.4
http://hacktolive.org/files/app-runner-0.4.deb

I gave you "App Runner 0.4" to make your ATI installation nice and easy!!

All your going to do is to right click on the file and select "Script, then move over to >Run >CLI App -As Root"
follow the on screen installation and njoy. ;)

The second problem seems to have been resolved
System>adminstration>Start-Up Manager :Disable Show Boot splash

About the first problem, I have installed the drives as instructed and getting ATI Catalyst Control Center.
But still I can't see compiz in action?
I never configured it before, it was on once the graphics drivers are installed.
am I missing anything?

Hello,

Go to the SYSTEM menu/Preferences/appearances/visual effects and turn Compiz on; you have 3 selections;
NONE
NORMAL
EXTRA

I always select extra if the card will handle that selection.
