When I first did the building from TheeMahn's advice the system was decent, sure wrecked first shot, but then I got it going after all was my very first OS. Now this second that R.I.P today, well is a different story so I figure I better say something to those that may want to do something as foolish as I did! What I did was not take a Ubuntu mini-remix which is the proper way! I took a loaded 13.04 with Ubuntu-Gnome on it and turned it around to make it more Gnome. That is where it did a headspin! I was never able to get the shell correctly installed and did a lot of makeshift stuff to run it as long as I did! I took a real gamble to try and fix the main issue which was some files that were a bit too old! Should have dawned on me from day one was just not quite right the whole thing. First few times simply updating messed the kernel up! Next time around I got it, but as I say never got the shell right because of 3 files! I found updated versions of the files and was able to get the next desktop 3.10 running for approximately 5 minutes before the top panel just blew apart! So personally, will recommend anyone reading this to simply wait until a mini remix of 13.10 is available! Do not rush into one of those combo's desktop Ubuntu-Gnome unless you just plan to use it the way it was built! Way too much aggravation to even get it running half-right. Was amazing I pushed it as far as I did, but that was simply because of all the great help and advice here!!! Gnome desktops although are really nice looking are very tricky!!! The way those desktops assemble reminds me of the Johnny Cash song "One piece at a time" do not want to quote the whole song, but mainly says about getting pieces from all over, old and new! Anyway just figured I would mention all this as 13.10 is still relatively new and not a mini remix yet! Just hope this saves someone time and aggravation!!!! Be back when, I have a system again!!!
