13.04 wants to dump everything for a couple updates?

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Wed Jun 05, 2013 6:13 pm

Now this one has me baffled to the moon! I am no pro putting these Ubuntu's together by no means, but this one was running pretty good up to a few days ago. All of a sudden gedit is shutting down and synaptic does the same when it feels like it! Anyway to my surprise today I look at updates(as I do every couple days!) and WHAMMO it wants to give 446 megs of downloads and in return, totally devastate the entire system! Wants to dump all desktops besides KDE ,Razor, Ubuntu and a pretty decent portion of all my programs just to fix an issue between Gnome Package management and Python Package management! If anyone is going through anything similar or has an idea to fix this deal, would be grateful for the advice. I mean to me all is running well besides those 2 programs! I can not see destroying the entire system just for 2 programs, is just not a valid path for me to choose!!!! I enjoy all the other desktops, but yes currently again messing with Gnome Fallback. Been working on some GTK Themes! So far have a nice brown one up and running. Plan to do some more soon as time permits. Here is a pic of the theme and will probably upload to Gnome org soon.

This is a bit worse as it wants to give me 464 megs and take away over a gig or programs and desktops!!!! Am tipped. If I would have seen this one coming probably would have stuck with the 12.10 I had. Sure it was not perfect, but this stuff here is very scary!!!! Still though as I say runs good minus gedit and synaptic. Is not like those 2 programs constantly mess up, just here and there!!!! I mean what is going to be uninstalled is what I really enjoy and use everyday!!! That is the hardest part!!! Is almost as if Ubuntu team knows exactly what I use and just says "Well you made a few mistakes putting it together, now you get to pay!" For anyone out there reading this if you are going to assemble one of these as I did, make sure not to get any gnome package management! Why????? This is the whole downfall of my OS. Thought would be decent to have package management for gnome software and another for the rest! Nope, Gnome package management as far as I can see is only a trainwreck and avoid at all costs!!!!!

Your using the Gnome Backports ppa right? For Gnome 3.8?

You shouldn't install with synaptic. But it is certainly a better idea than using Ubuntu Software Center..but still..ideally..

Open a terminal, and run synaptic without privileges...think of it as a guide..

So if you are using terminator, you can start synaptic by typing synaptic(no root, no sudo) and then split the terminator and have the other side go root...

kwinned2.png

In this manner you can check what you are doing but you are not depending so much on what synaptic may or may not do.

Gedit...ehhhhhh

Gedit sucks
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install geany

However, if synaptic is not working you probably have problems.

As far as this super large upgrade....

Not only Gnome, but backports...are you backported?

This is a dilemma with backports, if you want to install a backport to get a later version, you may want to comment that backport out, otherwise, every time you apt-get upgrade, boooooooom!!!!

True you are getting programs removed, but most are replaced..if you have KDE backport, that would easily explain the 500mb. Big roll of the dice with this, especially if you have multiple DE, and last I checked most versions of Razor are dependant on the KDE suite..KDE on it's own seems to get horribly lost in all this, Gnome backports are a straight disaster.

And now, the completely true facts, as told by an anonymous man hiding behind a screen name:

Does not look like I have any backports for 3.8. Maybe is a problem, will check soon. Just have never went through an extreme like this! As said was a huge mistake to take the two package managers as seems all they do is battle and not work!!!! Xan yes do have Geany installed just got used to Gedit. I use Geany here and there and it works very well! I am not lying when I say have a few things if I go to update, there goes the entire system! I know I also figured as the mistake I made even though it sounds trivial, was quite huge and now as they say has come to bite me in the behind! Originally stated was not a wise move to build this OS with my Laptop, just was not strong enough to handle the complications!!!! I do not see any implications that if I installed the updates, that there would be a chance of all the removed programs being re-installed. I would simply be left with about 20/100 programs, 3/7 desktops and even loose my favorite new icons!!!! So its either the hell with the 17 updates and suffer gedit and synaptic working as it wants to or simply watch the whole system be destroyed! A funny thing about all this is every time I have ever had any problem with a Ubuntu, Google Earth is the first program that wants to split!!!! KDE and Razor would be of the 3 desktops remaining! Now even if by chance re-installation of all the programs and desktops would happen, I would be downloading an entire day!!!! Can not afford that kind of bill! Made most of this OS at school. Graduated so really do not have business over there again to do the same! So either I fix it or it croaks! Just wish I knew how to take care of this. Will see what comes up as have a few ideas from the both of you. Thanks and will get back to you and let you know what happens! Also got another theme done. Call this one bb-Da Blue-theme. Have a few more in the works. Gnome 3.8 needs some decent gtk's and hoping to get some up there soon!!!

Re: 13.04 wants to dump everything for a couple updates?

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Thu Jun 06, 2013 8:00 pm

So just in case some are reading and wondering about this, I have even used apt-get build-dep to fix synaptic and gedit. Still all attempts to get 17 upgrades which to me seem on the bogus side fail! It now raises another question I have. Is it possible for a virus to get into package management and claim you need to destroy your OS??? I mean this is the strangest occurrence I have ever had on any Ubuntu!!!! At present am running clam-tk to check for viruses. Am sorry as I can not believe these packages listed are even legitimate if dependencies can not be built for them. Yes I tried that, and I get BS! So I am really starting to believe this is some sort of SHAM! I have never seen anything like this and am totally curious if anyone here has????? I mean take a look at the post above and read thru real careful. That is more than half my OS!!!

To me, it seems like you have issues with entire package groups being listed as "not needed" by apt-get.

Do not know but what is weird is it all runs pretty good and fairly fast! Until yesterday I never had a problem getting updates! All of a sudden these 17 updates come in and it just wants to take the entire OS apart! To me makes no sense at all. I am no pro at this as is only the 2nd successful(or I thought?) system I put together out of 5 tries! No viruses, just the usual wasted Chrome pages! Get a few of those a week!!! Web page building is not an easy task and do not care who you are is possible to mess things up on them when building! I should have just assembled something less complicated! Am reaching for the stars when I just do not possess enough knowledge to do so! As I said what is a pain is almost everything listed is what I use everyday!!!! Without most of that stuff is not worth nothing to me. To go ahead and reassemble is not really an option as is hefty downloading and Verizon Wireless bill is just too much to handle!!! Will keep trying to fix, just has to be a dependency or something. Any clues what to do is greatly appreciated!!! Just want to keep running this as like I said minus this crap runs real good!
