Besides HP what printers will work with Linux???

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Fri May 24, 2013 3:43 pm

Okay so I got this 13.04 loaded with drivers and for what am not so sure! I went out bought a brand new Epson XP-300. System just laughs at it and does nothing with it at all! I have been to the Epson site downloaded all the drivers and installed them and still there is no effect at all when I click test or print! This is getting depressing as I thought with all the drivers I installed into this OS, I would have hooked immediately and been printing anything and everything when needed!!! This is looking like one area that needs work. I have heard Linux was bad for Printers but figured that was old hat. Apparently, this is one part that has not advanced! Sure needs to though!!!! Also when I installed the one deb it stated needed 7 more packages so with about 5 debs and an rpm installed plus those 7 packages am at lucky number 13, which would lead one to believe all is good! Well is not so. Printer does nothing!!!!

HP's the best for Linux, then Lexmark and then Epson. Your printer should work np. Would you like help installing it? This should get it working https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+question/212355
Use the debian package ;) iscan_2.29.1-5~usb0.1.ltdl7_amd64.deb or iscan_2.29.1-5~usb0.1.ltdl7_i386.deb

Guess it is some kind of delayed reaction! I mean I rebooted a couple times and I installed those drivers at about 3pm is now 4:30pm and now is registering and working! I also found a couple utilities on Ubuntu Software Center for checking ink levels and another small utility in Synaptic! Figured being a wireless unit might be nice in case the ole lady's printer runs out of ink!!! As have said am not a big printer and scanner person. Still though will need it as have to get some resumes up! Is job hunting time as am graduated and ready to work!!! To clarify though, those were the exact drivers I downloaded from Epson. I installed them, rebooted tried and nothing. Some reason this time took a while to register, which is strange considering how fast everything else worked and works!!! I guess is just a weak point in this system. Who knows, maybe I caused it!!!! Am happy will not have to drive back there to exchange this Printer!!! Is a 17mile trip and that is only one way!!! From what I see of the printing looks much nicer than the Lexmark I had!!!! Well, least if this is something that may happen to someone else here, they will know it might take a few boots and to ensure they also use the utility on USC to show the ink levels as it also helps with some other processes. I guess these printers are pretty sophisticated these days!!! Just as everything else moves forward, they do too!!! Thanks very much for responding quickly, Micro!!! There are just some aspects with all this that I only have very slim knowledge on!!! Printers/Scanners have always been an Achilles heel to me!!! This Epson least kind of goes with the Monitor!!! Both are black! Just hope I get more time out of the ink than that Lexmark! To me though seems is more ink since is 4 individual cartridges unlike the Lexmark's one! Price wise on the cartridges is not a far leap above the Lexmark. Others were higher, is why I chose this one plus the wifi!!! Anyway thanks a bunch am off to get some yard work done! Always lots here with 2 acres!!!
