Solaris 11 Adventure!

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Tue Nov 06, 2012 5:53 pm

As have mentioned am very curious about Solaris 11, not for full time usage but for a learning experience! Well I got the image and is now installed on VBOX. First time around I blew it and forgot to get the USB settings wrong and was left connectionless! Ah what they hay! I never used one of these Ova type files before so wasn't sure what to expect if all is done for the user or if you can't be lazy as I was and have to put the settings in! So is second time around and is working with it Gnome 2.3 which I was a little shocked at! Unsure if I could get Gnome 3.6 for it but will give it a shot! You know me, have to have a little fun with these VBOX images! Besides is all in the course of my own education! Not sure what it is that I downloaded for it at school, but it did sound like Office Software that was usable for the x86 version of Solaris I installed! Download was reasonably quick which is great. Guess Oracle has to keep their site up well as most packages are rather large!!! Well it took 15 minutes originally from my flash drive to get onto the system. Am not seeing any type of installation file and the PDF is sounding a little more than what I am after! This means might not be the regular Office stuff I want to learn! Some of this stuff requires more education than I have! This OS surely makes one feel like a child! Sure it does seem like it runs alright, but Oracle does seem a little high and mighty! Will admit boot up is a bit faster than the other Unix system I checked out months back and not too long ago on its recent successor. Very intelligent people and am also very grateful for the knowledge I obtained from them! I firmly believe that OS will one day be the most successful Unix system and will surpass Solaris. The developer is a man to be greatly admired as our developer on Ultimate! These people genuinely care! I can't knock Solaris on this as have not tried any of their forums or anything. All I can state is: "I wish I had a Masters!" Will take some time for me to figure out what I need to do to get things half way decent on there as package management does not appear to be half as sophisticated as the other Unix system test and not even a quarter of Linux systems! Will also read up more on the things I downloaded and hopefully within a day or two get back to anyone interested in this adventure!
