Sorry, it's a side effect from being so close to Redmond. I've actually spent a lot of time at the Microsoft campus, as I have family that worked there. I personally have access to plenty of Microsoft products and WAIK is pretty cool really. As someone who has an interest in where the industry is going in terms of solid state memory, I feel that the Surface is unprogressive.

Also, I am curious as to the viewpoints considering the new OEM restrictions on hardware that Microsoft is enforcing. The effects of this have yet to be seen. While this may not influence wether or not you can install an alternate OS, it may have severe implications on dual booting with the MS OS.

I was thinking more in terms of the argument against Linux as a viable operating system. So often it is the lack of games that comes up. Personally, I don't quite understand this viewpoint as it is far cheaper and more efficient to do this via console.

I used to think so. Now, however, after the awesome install music stops playing, I find it incredibly daunting to bring everything up to date from a base install. Not difficult, mind you, just terribly boring. I do value my XP preinstalled environment discs highly, I just could never find a way to get around having an internal hdd assigned as C to make them operable and progress to a dynamic external instead of flash. There is a way of course, but it was much easier to do exactly what I wanted to do with Linux so I got sidetracked from that project. Then I lost all my data.

I download and watch movies and listen to music mostly. However, re-installing is a real p.i.t.a. so I keep my machine clean so I don't have to do it very often.

Xp as an OS is an extremely interesting subject. When it came out and for a time afterwards it would almost seem as if were designed to break peoples computers. Now everyone thinks of it as a super stable and flexible operating system, but it took a minute for the hardware to catch up and make that true. When it did many of the system breaking bugs had been ironed out and now it serves as the template for what most people percieve an operating system should be.

You can do most things with it. Ubuntu is the closest Linux alternative but has some catching up to do.
I like the new one(12.10). I am running it in VB(cinnamon desktop).

I think many people think the same thing when it comes to Unity. Why does that thing have to be there? That might work very well with a touchscreen, and maybe thats the intended goal in the long term, but for now it brings back horrible memories of Internet Explorer, taskbars trying to take away what little screen I had while horrible gifs tried to eat my brain. I realise its not that bad but it all starts somewhere.
