Why can't any OS multitask worth a $#!%?

Postby tittiger » Tue Dec 14, 2010 7:02 pm

Yes I am told that all the major OS's multitask. I have a dual processor and 3 gigs of RAM and yet even when I am not running any hungry apps the cursor in all the OS's will just become immovable as if the machine has so much to do that it can not spare the resources to redraw the cursor as I try to move it.

In Ubuntu Ultimate Edition the cursor becomes a globe when it is unavailable. I just don't get it. I have a 1000 times the processing power of my first machine and 5000 times the memory and yet the kernel can not give me enough resources to move that damn cursor!

Thanks for listening!

What cpu do you have at what speed, if I might ask ?
what ram at what speed , What timings ?

What os ?

what is considered multi tasking by your standards ?

Kuz I for one on both systems can data transfer 5 GB, brows the web and code a movie all at the same time and my mouse does not do that.

Hi!
I have an AMD dual core (I am not sure what utility to run to find out specifics)
Ubuntu 10.x as Ultimate Edition 2.8
3 gigs of RAM I think (I am not sure what utility to run to find out specifics)

and I am in windows right now due to the headphone jack not working under 2.8

Multitasking to me with these resources would be to at least run a web browser and not have to wait for a slice of the processors time to get control of the cursor.
The most intensive thing I do is to watch a movie usually a .flv

TIA
Joe

use cpu z in windows to find cpu and ram specs

use system profiler in Ultimate Edition 2.8.

Toss up your cpu and ram specs and lets see if I can help shed some light on your multi tasking problems.

FYI dual core means very little.

2 cores @ say 1.6 Ghz to 2.2 Ghz range wont multi task worth a dime.

2.4 Ghz to 3.4 ghz dual core should be able to mild multi task ( do what your asking )

quad core to hexa core should be able to multi task like a king.

Keep in mind ram plays in around 45% of this equation.

3 GB of DDR 2 533 and 667 don't multi task worth a dime

3 GB of DDR 400 or 333 or 266 might as well give up there lol.

Might be ok with say 6 to 10 tabs on a browser and word processor at the same time at best.

It's a very low end laptop but I am amazed at the resources that you say that just a browser requires.

I see CPU Z does not cut and paste so here goes....
AMD Athlon II M300 core speed keeps changing but seems to top out at 2 Ghz
I am confused at the RAM specs but here goes....
DDR2 4096 MBytes DRAM frequency 333 Mhz (varies) FSB:DRAM 3:5
PC2-6400 (400 MHz)

Did I miss anything important?

no you got what I needed.

So here is why your suffering.

2 Ghz low end m300 cpu = none multitasking ultra low end business class cpu

3 GB DDR 2 667 = business end low end ram.

recommendations

download and use oz unity 1.0 in netbook mode or Ultimate Edition 2.8 with low or no eye candy with meticity window manager and gtk windows decorator.

you should then gain some multitasking ability to some degree. you should be able to brows the web , type & watch a movie all at the same time.

FYI your only slightly better then netbook on over all system specs.

netbook is just that a netbook = light every day use for light duty.

windows 7 would be a no go on that laptop, that os is just far far to bloated.

I mean no disrespect, I am just trying to help you understand why your not multitasking very well.

my laptop has a good 400% + performance over yours and is why I am able to multi task far better with it.

I have 4 cpu cores and 8 GB of ram and I too get cracked in the mouth occasionally. I contribute some of it to poor programming, flash is notorious. Some programs are written specifically with parallel processing in mind mksquashfs comes to me. While it instantly drops my machine to its knees it is hand in hand in processing time, it fully utilizes whatever resources are available. There are pluses and minuses.

and the end all be all question to ask Titiger is...

please say that you are using U.E 64 bit version

32 bits are fun to play with 64 bit makes it a bit more snappy. also, you could kill a few daemon processes that you will not be using like that blue tooth thingy and such.

He stated already what his intentions were for multi tasking.

He should be able to multi task fine with the apps and programs he intendeds to use.

I still think it is 100% hardware based at this point.

My laptop with just a m540 i5 is able to do what he wants and far more in terms of multi tasking. So I know a faster system would help a lot.

Desktop with a hexa core 1090T @ 3.6 Ghz is a king at multi tasking.
