Hello all,
Sounds as if XBMC should be the sort of "Media Center" software I am looking for. I thought it would be nice if it were installed on my Office system, so I could watch movies and videos. I added the Repos as described in LeadFingers' posted instructions here: viewtopic.php?f=57&t=2527&st=0&sk=t&sd=a#p25583 . After installing, I opened the program, and tried to configure via the Settings button. All seemed to go well, but when I play a video, all starts out ok, but if I try to Pause, or FastForward/Rewind, or any other action, XBMC freezes with a constant "stuttering" sound that will not stop until the system is re-booted. I am running Ultimate Edition 2.0 X64, on the Shop: system listed below in my sig.
This is my 1st attempt with getting XBMC configured. Audio, and Pictures seem OK, but the Video is unreliable, at this time. The Audio Output is set to Analog, and the Audio Output Device is set to default under Settings>System>Audio Hardware inside XBMC. Originally the Audio Output was set to Digital when XBMC was installed. It did the same sort of "freeze" complete with the constant "stutter" (which sounds as if the last second (or less) of the audio track is stuck in a very fast loop).
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Can anyone point me toward a solution? I would believe that the hardware this is all running on should be more than capable...yes??
Any ideas anyone...??

Install it on your home system and see if you get the same result. If you do, try adjusting your sound system(use alsa). I have never had much of a problem with it(mind you I don't like it much).
I had the odd crash with it but that is what most software is like.

pch.shot and LeadFingers,
Thanks for the input pch.shot, I've been trying to get this installed at home, as suggested. But there is a problem - for some reason the Repo for XBMC does not work. I copied and pasted the entries from the first post in this thread, by LeadFingers -
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ubuntu intrepid main
and
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ubuntu intrepid main.
My home system could not find XBMC in Synaptic. Tried several times to find the problem, but no joy.
When I arrived at the office this morning, I looked at my sources.list on the shop PC and discovered a small problem: those entries given by LeadFingers are not correct... They should read as follows:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
and
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main.
This works on the Shop PC. I believe I followed the instructions in a different post when I installed XBMC to the Shop PC, and not the Repo Entries from the 1st post in this thread, the one by LeadFingers.
I'll try this corrected info when I get home this evening, and report the results back here.

stanca,
Thanks for that advice, however, I have looked at Ultimatix, Add/Remove, and Synaptic. I cannot find XBMC in any of them. I did say that I found a discrepancy between what did work on my Office PC and what is posted in the very 1st post in this thread, as the correct "lines" to add to my sources.list.
I am installing now on my home system, after correcting the REPO entry error, as I posted earlier today.

Please Note:
This:.png
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ubuntu intrepid main

Should have been:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main

Notice that the URL is incorrect in the first set of Repo lines, and that the corrected lines contain one more "field" that the incorrect lines. Without this correction, XBMC is not in any of the installers because it is not at the address given in the first post in this thread.
I am not trying to "school" anyone here, just get the point across, that if the first post in this thread contains incorrect data, then none of the installed "Package Installers" or "Package Managers" in Ultimate Edition 2.0 will be able to see and install the package XBMC. If that information is used by an end user expecting to get XBMC to install, then they will also be asking for help.
It is interesting that the XBMC appears in Synaptic after the Repo correction, but still does not appear in Ultimatix, even after XBMC was installed from Synaptic...... :? :?

Cell,
Your information was helpful and correct - it got me to PPA and XBMC without a problem. I had already made my Repo corrections and installed XBMC b4 I read your post, however.

strider5236,
I see what you were saying about the link taking me to the correct site, I tried them both ways:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ubuntu intrepid main

and

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main

and both took me to the same webpage.
When I use the 1st set of "deb" entries in my sources.list, and run sudo apt-get update they fail to resolve the address and do not fetch anything from the site. But, as soon as I made the change shown in the 2nd set of "deb" entries (ppa), then re-ran sudo apt-get update, the errors vanished and the application was now installable via Synaptic. However, this did not seem to resolve the problem of XBMC not appearing in either Ultamatix or Add/Remove on the main menu. I thought all 3 of these utilities would use the same Reoisitory list, ie. sources.list.
Oh... BTW, is the "list" you gave in your post a copy of your /etc/apt/sources.list? If so, I may be tempted to do some clean up in my sources.list.

Anyway, thanks for the assistance and everything else you have done to help... :D :D

I am trying out XBMC on my Vista PC for now! I typed in the three zip codes I wanted to use for my weather reports, and they show up when I go to the main weather page, but when I go to check the weather, it always reverts back to the three defaults. What am I doing wrong?

I have over 700 movies on my external hard drive (6TB) in AVI, MKV, MP4, as well as a couple other formats, I do not have cover art for them. Is the a way to get them from the web? And will XBMC do this some how?

I am building an HTPC and plan to run Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.1. However it is still weeks from being completed. So I have to test this software on a windows pc.
