I Don't pogo, but..[SOLVED]

Postby Wolfie Lee » Mon Aug 10, 2009 12:53 pm

I have recently installed 2.0 in an older Compaq (and got PAID, actually! [for the re-condition, NOT Ultimate Edition 2.0]). It has an AMD 700Mhz proc with 750MB ram. Motherboard...? The vidcard is a 128ATI(?), and runs basic desktop effects - never tested further, they are not interested, just a basic internet machine for them. I have done all of the Firefox add-ons (JAVA, and such) the NEW Ultimatix throws in, and they are haveing problems with Re sizing the java applet on the pogo game site. The WINDOW resizes, while the applet just stays the same and goes to the corner. If I try to Ctrl + "+", it separates the the java panels apart, while leaving them the same size...? Any suggestions......?

Hi Wolfie Lee .

First Q is if you have update the system and the video card?
the next Q is if the Java package that you have install is the sun Java plug in for FireFox?

I downloded and activated the restricted drivers for the video card, and performed ALL (422+/-) updates available. And I installed the new ultimatix plug-ins (Adobe Flash, Java 6, and VLC plug-ins). System and Browser are 100% up to date...

If you want to find out what kind of video card is installed in the machine, run the following command in the "Terminal" It will put the version/module etc for the video gpu.

Code: Select all
sudo lspci | grep -i vga

For example:

Code: Select all
darkchild@ICT:~$ sudo lspci | grep -i vga
[sudo] password for darkchild:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV515 [Radeon X1300]

Run the following in a Terminal to check if direct rendering is enabled

Code: Select all
DISPLAY=:0 glxinfo | grep render
CPU Type: TripleCore AMD Athlon II X3 440, 2982 MHz (15 x 199)
Motherboard: ECS GF8200A (3 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Video, Gigabit LAN)
Motherboard Chipset: nVIDIA GeForce 8200, AMD K10
System Memory: 6GB (DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM)
Video Adapter: XFX ATI Radeon HD 4350 1GB

Thanks, I have not been able to get to it, as they are not all THAT concerned about this...it could be a while...I'll post the make/model when I can. I should be going fishing with him by the weekend, and will see if I can't get on the machine and check it out....

Here is the output of the terminal command:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 MX 440] (rev a3)

BTW...

NOW they are having a problem with the screen going Black, then fading back to solid White, then having to re-boot (this is while the computer is Active, not Idle, so it can't be a problem with the system going into screensaver, or hibernate mode). Dose this sound like the vid card is going bad? This has happened three time in two days. It is an older 700Mhz processor, as I mentioned, and the thing gets bogged down enough, at times to fade grey, then get brighter, while the proc is "catching up", while running a processor-intensive program...but these are separate occurrences.

........sorry, Stoner, no fishing pics, yet.........

If it was me I would put a lighter distro on it....then it should be snappy.

I ran Ubuntu on my old msi board with an 1.2 duron.Had a 9600 ati card, and 512megs of ram.It isn't a speed demon either. Then I put a lighter distro on it ,and it ran faster than anytime before.Granted with a couple of games it did slow up....just a bit... not much.

With today's apps being so resource hungry I would go as far as just using that pc as a firewall/router,or maybe a storage server....nothing more.
