Strange Nautilus problem

Postby ordlinuse » Sun Apr 19, 2009 6:46 am

My problem started when I tried to cut-paste two pictures from my desktop to the "pictures" folder at "home". Suddenly, my pictures folder "froze" and I had to force quit. From then, If I restart my computer, I get access to my pictures for a couple of seconds but then it freezes again and every time I try to access the folder It turns white and needs force quit-restart. All the other folders seem to be unaffected and work fine. I thought about uninstalling Nautilus and reinstalling it, but I'm afraid that it will cause more trouble due to several dependencies with other programs. And the thing that all the other folders work, except the pictures folder, make me thing that maybe a file got corrupt. Any clues anyone? Thanks.

Hi Nick! I tried reinstalling nautilus and nothing changed. Then I reinstalled nautilus-share, nautilus-data and nautilus-sendto....but again, nothing changed :( . So I'm guessing uninstall-install, is something I cannot avoid. Do you know if through Synaptic, using complete removal, will actually remove everything? or should I use a command from the terminal? If I use the terminal, can you suggest a command? I'll wait for a couple of days, if someone has another idea and if not, I'll goon with the uninstall. Thanks.

It might be just as easy to reformat and reinstall the operating system. Maybe there is a hardware issue of some kind that is causing this, like you graphics card.

...or you might try opening Terminal and run fsck on the drive with the folder in question...

@Saddle Tramp: I tried it and showed that everything is normal. Nothing changed.
@pch.shot: I doubt this is graphic card problem. As for the format, I don't want to give up that easy. I'll try to solve it a little bit more. Since it's a problem that takes place only for the "pictures" folder, I'll see if I can erase it and create another one.
Thanks all of you.

By the way....does anyone know if the procedure that deletes Pulse and uses Alsa for the default sound engine, works for the Ultimate Edition 2.1? I refer to Theemahn's post, that sends you at

Since this is a strange problem, I'll ask a stupid question(I'm known for these  ) You said you tried "copy and paste" Did you ever try "drag and drop"? Just a curiosity on my part

@deate: You stole the joy from me. I hate you :D !!! I moved the files one by one and everything turned back to normal. I found it by luck!!! How the h**l, did you find out??? and I had prepared my post to start like this:
Using my superior knowledge in linux, I used a secret technique called drag n drop to fix the problem!! and you took it away. Of course I'm kidding. I did find it by chance but you're faster and obviously more experienced. By the way, just to learn something from this story, can you explain why this thing happened? if there is an explanation. Thanks again :D .

Yes, obviously, Nautilus doesn't like having Greek photos rammed down it's throat   No, just kidding with you! My guess (and only a guess) maybe a memory problem with the size of the files all at once?????
Edit: I'm old and have had 2 heart attacks....just don't like the words "Terminal" or "Code", drag and drop, drop and roll whatever, those aren't so bad  glad you got it worked out
