k9copy problem

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.0

k9copy problem

Postby DrSketch » Tue Feb 24, 2009 7:43 pm

Ok, I'm sure I'm just being stupid here (been on Linux for 5 years, and I still feel like a newb), but maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I use k9copy to make physical backups of my dvd collection (just to be safe) and then k3b to burn them. It worked fine in Ubuntu, but when I switched to Ultimate 2.0 it quit working. To be more specific: k9 will get about 10% into the rip and then completely close out. It gives an error (generic one I can't remember at the moment), and when I click "More Info", the error message goes away. I've tried the same disc on Ubuntu (saved it on a partition in case I didn't like Ultimate) and it works fine there, so it has to be a problem somewhere in Ultimate.

So, I'm not even really sure where to start looking for the solution, because I'm not even certain what the problem is. It could be a problem with the DVD driver, or a codec, or something else. Any tips or ideas on how to start troubleshooting this? I'd love to get it working, because it's a PITA to switch back to Ubuntu every time I want to make a backup...

Try Brassero instead. I have had problems with K9 copy before so I don't use it now.

Can I use it to compress the video for dual-layer discs? That's the only real need I had for k9, I used another piece of software for a long time until I had to deal with a dual-layer disc...

I'll give it a whirl tonight on an older disc. Thanks for your help!

I think DVD Shrink is available for Linux. That would solve your other issue.

Nick: I have a feeling that's what it was! I had installed so much on my old system, trying to remember what I really needed and what I didn't was almost impossible! Ran everything this AM, will test it tonight when I get home.
Thanks so much everyone for your help! (I'm going to look into DVDShrink tonight too)

It looks like you can use dvd shrink through wine:

Ok, I got DVD Shrink up and running (thanks again for that link, it worked perfectly), and now I've got what is probably a REALLY stupid question: what's the benefit of running DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink vs running k9copy? It's not a time advantage; k9 took roughly 30 minutes to extract and compress a dual-layer disc, and at a guess the "DVD" programs are taking roughly 1 1/2 hours (about 30 on Decrypter and 1 hour on Shrink). Is there some other advantage that makes up for the extra time?

There isn't one. But if k9copy didn't work it is better than nothing, right. I use easy vcd on the Windows side to rip dvds. It just works. I haven't found much else that is easy and does a good job.
It compresses the dvd to 1/5 the original so you get good quality and not too big of a file. I would imagine either re-install k9 copy or find a different version and install it that way. There is probably a codec missing to make it work properly. You may try installing ubuntu-restricted-extras and see if it works then. Look on the bright side. You have learned something new. Now you know how to use Wine!!! You can also install libdvdcss2. This is the library for reading encrypted dvds.

p.s. Re-read this post from the start and see if it is starting to make any sense yet(like adding the medibuntu repositories for one and installing libdvdcss2).

Yep, this is the first time I've ever actually had Wine running properly, so I'm feeling pretty proud of that. I'm testing k9 now, after wiping k9 and libdvdcss and reinstalling. Fingers crossed!
