Install frozen bubble and see if that plays or try one of the card games.
Ultimate is only based on Ubuntu. That is where the similarity ends.
It is Debian so the lay out is much the same but has a different kernel.
Another option is to install an older kernel but that can be a bit of an adventure!!!!

You can go into your xorg.conf and set up your graphics from there but I don't suggest it for everybody. How Linux savvy, are you?

Let me think on it for a while. If you screw up your xorg.conf you won't be able to boot up.
Stepping back one or two kernels would be a lot easier to do.
It may be something totally unrelated like a bad install or a funky disc/burn.
You could re-install and see if that helps. Or download the iso(do a check sum) and burn the disc again. If you still have the iso you can use unetbootin to install from a usb drive(It would have to be over 4 gigs for gamers).
