Question: How to install withouth DVD/USB

Postby tuxsax » Sat Feb 14, 2009 8:09 am

Hi,
So, here I am, with a nice old PC that can handle any Linux very well and I'm trying to make it work, so I want to install UE2.0 Gamers, the PC has nice specs, it's an AMD Athlon 1100 with 2Gig of ECC DDR400 RAM
I have two identical HD 15GB each which I'm plannig to run on stripe RAID for the system and another two HD 40G each which I'll create a big LVM for storage. I've also inserted a nice graphics card, I don't remember exactly which one it is but it supports good 3D performance, it's an old NVidia, perhaps a 5200, can't remember.
Now my problem is I don't have a DVD drive and the PC can't boot from USB, so I can't install UE2.0 which comes in DVD because of it's size. I've been trying to make an installation using my other PC as a mirror to network installation, with apache hosting the ISO mounted image as /ubuntu/ folder.
It doesn't work!
I'm thinking of setting up a PXE "server" but it's a bit of too much work, and I hope someone here can give me a better idea of how can I accomplish this task without getting too complicated.
Thanks,

Don't be so cheap. Go spend 5 bucks on a used dvd rom. It will be more work than it's worth. Or take one out of another box and hook it up to the ide cable and set the jumper pins for master and slave. You don't even have to install the drive. Just open up the box and attach the cables!!!

Wrong answers! ;) I wanted something doable NOW, if I wanted to wait till tomorrow and I had money I could go to the shop and buy me a whole new PC, wouldn't I? <BREW>

I was thinking of some creative way to do it, I can't believe there's not a way, perhaps because Ultimate Edition is not based on the "alternative" ubuntu installation image?
If it was, you could just plug the USB in the current running OS and use the included "cdupgrade" script

MMmmmmhhh, can you please explain why that jackass has american flag colors???

gotcha....

I guess I'll have to see the way to get a DVD ROM, but this won't be today, so I'll have to wait, and this pisses me off, I'm like a little kid, when I want something I want it NOW, and if it's not NOW I get pissed and tomorrow is no longer good anymore

Once upon a time, I was a PC technician, all I did all day was assembling and disassembling PCs, all day, open, replace, fix, change, close, install, uninstall, reinstall, etc. Nowadays, I work "in front" of the PC and thinking about opening the case makes me feel bad, I'm a spoiled guy today... But you can't help me, so... the hell with it.
I even tried setting up PXE, DHCP and TFTP servers on my other PC to host the installation and do a network boot, it sounds simple but it's much more complicated than it seems to be.

well tuxsax, seeing as how you have a bit of antiquated hardware around, you could break the Iso image down to around 1.2 to 1.3 Mb chunks each. then install via FLOPPY!! :o :o

I know that was bad wasn't it? I think will go around the back of the forums and chastise myself, Strider can come watch.

Can't you just mount the iso file from another hard drive(select autorun) and install that way.
