Really??? How many drive by downloads of stuff have you encountered with Windows??? It is your system with Linux, and only you decide what gets added! That's the beauty of Linux and why it's way more secure than Windows...And once you get used to it, you can set permissions to what ever you want, so that particular parts of your system can be accessed without the trouble...I don't know about you, but I kinda' like having control :D

Go to user and groups, unlock root with your password, check properties and set the root password by hand. Open up login window, security, check allow admin login. Now log back in as root and you can do whatever you want. It's your computer. If you screw something up reinstall. It is as simple as that. Just a warning, running as root cuts down on your system security. Logging in as root is as secure as running Windows(if not more secure). The best part of Linux is by having a user password and a root password it is much more difficult to hack your system. That's why LInux has next to no viruses. You need root access to change most things. If you want a safe setup, after you have made all the changes you want, log out of root and then back in as a user.

The quickest & easiest way I've been able to find...
Add the Nautilus extension and you can open any file or folder from the right click menu As Administrator.

To add this extension...
open Synaptic
install nautilus-gksu
next time you need to open anything as root, just right click on it and select Open as Administrator.
