In the network configuration under wireless is dhcp on because this will allow it to obtain an ip that is available from the router also check in tje router config to see if enough ip s are available

No worries... Yes I've tried everything you mentioned. I'm now on my home network and again I get the same results. I even tried a different wireless adapter this ones a USB adapter (Netgear WG111). This is not a laptop the card I've been using is a PCI card. The PCI card and USB wireless adpater works fine on my Windows partition which is on the same computer. I hate it when Windows works! :x

BTW although I'm relatively new to Linux I'm a Compter Technician/Network Admin by profession, so I'm pretty sure I can follow your instructions.

Thanks for trying,
Steve

I have a saying, Steve. "If at first you don't suceed, give up!! Try something else". Save yourself a lot of grief and get a hard wired pci card for LInux. Eventually you will find a solution or someone will build support into the kernel. Something you can try is another live distro and see if you get the same result.
The reason I use Ultimate because it recognized all my hardware on both my computers.
Here are a couple to try:
http://www.puppylinux.org/ slackware based
http://www.tinymelinux.com/doku.php/download pclinuxos based
These two are very small and will only take a few minutes to dowload and burn to disc or use unetbootin to boot from a usb flash drive(save yourself a disc or two) http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/
If they work for you then you will narrow it down to a distro issue or a kernel issue.
If you are feeling adventurous(and you can find a tarball of the correct drive) you can compile it into the kernel(thats the way it used to be done with Linux).
There is also Virtualbox or VMplayer to try things out from windows.
http://www.virtualbox.org/
http://bagside.com/ This link has pre-compiled operating systems for VMplayer.
There, that should keep you busy for a while!!!

Thanks for all the responses.
Deate I looked through the thread you directed me to. Very interesting but it does not appear that the wrapper is the problem. It goes through the motions of obtaining an IP address I get the "swirls" like I do when the lan card is obtaining an IP address but it just fails on the wireless. If I had only one card fail I would blame the problem on it, even though it works in Windows but I've tried a couple wireless adapters including USB and have come up with the same results.

As I mentioned in a earlier post at home I don't have a choice. Our upstairs living area is not wired for Ethernet and I'm not about to start drilling holes and tearing things apart for this project. I've used other flavors Mandravia and Suse 10 to name few but I'm really stuck on Ultimate Edition 2.0 (Gamer), it's such a excellant build. One of my wireless cards worked right out of the box on the Mandravia installed I used for awhile. What's also odd is that I hooked by buddy on this distro and his wireless card works just fine. I'm going to call him up Monday and see if he can bring his card in for me to test on my build.

Later,
Steve

I hear ya' buddy, went through these same pains myself, will look back for my own thread, forgot which card I finally wound up with, in 2 machines I might add...the first 1 was a linksys and no matter what i tried, it wouldn't connect...so I finally ripped it out and replaced it with another model of linksys that used the RALINK chip...bam... recognized and working in both machines...I'll post the model in an edit when I find it...and eBay can be your best friend here!!!
Edit: Ok. here it is... and like I said, got this 1 in 2 machines, working since 1.8...viewtopic.php?f=18&t=884&start=10

I removed the Wireless PCI card from my machine and put it in my buddies computer, and guess what it worked fine. i didn't even have to install the NDIS wrappers. His install is the Ultimate Edition 2.0 mine is the gamers edition. I'm going to download a new image and have at it again. Wish me luck

Thanks,
Steve

Best of luck ;) I don't know if you saw this (or if it's on Gamers, I assume it is) but if you go to System>Administration> all the way down at the bottom is "Windows Wireless Drivers" which is a ndiswrapper tool ...I haven't had to use it, but if it's built in it might be a better choice than downloading and installing yourself?????
