i don't want to make any changes to the system as it was installed...
please do explain, also, about the dependencies and the codecs!!!!
Thanks!!!!
As far as the dependencies for an application or "package", if you synaptic or "add/remove" programs, all those processes are handled for you automagically now a days. Just open up the terminal the next time you get that update button flashing on your computer, it will tell you all the things its doing such as selecting previously deselected packages, and searching for dependencies... so far as codecs are involved, the majority f codecs, or software translation files as i call them are either licensed so that people will have access to a particular media content rather easily. or their is a linux equivalent. on the other hand some licensing issues prevent them from being applied to a base distribution eg. flash player for you tube. but Ultimate Edition which is an off shoot of Ubuntu which is the off shoot of Debian, which is a flavor of linux has a bit of a pedigree. to its name.
dependencies are the extra files that a package needs to work properly with either hardware or software.so instead of rewriting lines of code for each iteration of a particular software, a lot of linux programs share particular sets of code and that cuts down on software bloatn
