Wubi & 2.0 Gamers Edition

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.0

Wubi & 2.0 Gamers Edition

Postby chvnx » Sun Nov 16, 2008 9:07 am

How do I install the 2.0 Gamers edition using Wubi?

I have tried to copy the .iso to the same folder as wubi.exe, but the installer does not detect Ultimate.

I have tried to install it off of a DVD, because I read that if I just put the CD in and run the installer that it should detect Ultimate. When I do this, it allows me to choose only "Ubuntu" from the drop down menu and so I assume this is actually Ultimate. However, when I try to install it, it crashes Wubi after a few minutes. It freezes during the loading process at "Checking Installation Files..." - "Calculating checksums...", and then crashes in traditional windows fashion.

If I hit cancel while it's at the stage right before it crashes, the install proceeds but tried to download 700mb worth of Ubuntu that I already have - on the DVD and in the same folder with the wubi.exe installer.

I'm such a noob. Is what I am trying to do even possible?

I'm on XP. I have 2 gb of RAM and my PC runs Ubuntu 8.10 really well when installed with Wubi so I'm stumped.

Just put the DVD in your machine and let it boot up to where you have a live desktop. Then try it out in live mode and then click the install icon on your desktop if you want to install it. You don't need Wubi to install it.

I've ran it off of the live cd. I liked it a lot. Thanks for the help, anyways, but, that's not really what I asked about.

I don't want to get rid of Windows and I don't want to format and partition my HD. That's the whole point of Wubi I thought. If I didn't need Windows then I wouldn't need Wubi, would I, lol? or can I do that without destroying my windows?

So, once again, is there a way to install this with Wubi? Anyone?

Sorry for my ignorance.

If it only allows you one option then I guess you are out of luck, lol!!
You can use vmware to run it if you don't want to install it or you can install Ubuntu and add all the packages missing(including the theme packs) or just continue to use the live disc.
The other option is to install and dual-boot Windows and Ultimate(the best).
p.s. Why do you need Windows? :?: :?: :?:

Is that free? Does it work like Wubi and allow for me to boot into Ultimate at startup? Do I need to be a rocket scientist to work it?

No thanks. I have no idea how to do that.

just continue to use the live disc.

I already covered this one. Not what I asked about.

That's exactly what I want, but I do NOT want to delete the files on my computer and I don;t have a CD to re-install Windows. Is it possible to do with Wubi? A yes or no would be awesome.

I know that you can install other distros using Wubi that are not a part of the offical Wubi installer, but every time I try to do it with Ultimate with the instructions I've found on Google...well..you read my first post.

Why do you need Windows?

Because there is software that I need to run that will not run in Linux and I know of no alternatives. Even if I did, it wouldn't change my mind. I still like Windows.

Here's a thought!! Download and install this: http://www.macrium.com/
and make a copy of your Windows install. Save it somewhere safe.
Then install Ultimate along with Windows that way you can do a fair comparison of the 2 operating systems. If something goes horribly wrong just put your Windows image back. No harm, no foul.

I don't want to spend money on software. If I wanted to to do that I'd switch to a Mac.

You can install other Ultimate releases with Wubi. I've asked for a 'yes' or a 'no' several times now: is it possible to install 2.0 with Wubi, since it was possible to do it with previous releases?

Guys, Wubi comes with Ultimate...

You would have no idea why it's not working? I've even tried to run the .iso mounted instead off of CD and the install still fails.

O.K. We are going to get to the bottom of this even if it kills me!!
When I put the DVD in my optical drive(which is set to autorun) on my Windows XP box this comes up(see screenshot). You choose the middle one and you should be good to go.
