Hey there all.
Painterh here. I just wanted to post regarding my latest experience with Ultimate Edition and Ubuntu in general. I have been using (and a fan of Ultimate Edition since 1.5). I have had 1.8 x64 on my desktop since it first came out. However, I chose to do the Ubuntu upgrade to Intrepid when it was released due to my reluctance to do a complete reinstall. So consequently, I no longer have an authentic Ultimate install even though Intrepid update did update all the software that came preloaded with Ultimate Edition 1.8 (and that's alot), so I'm at least happy I still have all my programs. I will eventually do a full install of 2.0, but it's lost it's flavor.
The main issue I have is the new laptop I just bought. I searched for laptop with a certain feature set, and ended up getting an ASUS M50VM-X1 which is a really sweet machine. It came with a Core 2 Duo P8400 (2.26 ghz), 250 gig HDD, bluetooth, a dedicated Nvidia 9600 graphics card w/1gig onboard memory, and 4 gigs of ram. Now the bad part/parts. First, it came loaded with Vista, and secondly after numerous attempts to setup dual boot with Ultimate Edition 2.0 I I found I am unable to install any version of ubuntu, kubuntu, or other. I cant even run the live cd/dvd. Apparently there is a bug in squashfs which causes parts of the cd or dvd to be unreadable. I did a lot of forum searching, and not to mention most of a day farting around trying to make it work. I made a whole stack of coasters (good install disks for someone else but coasters for me). I tried existing disks I had made and installed from of 1.8 x86, 1.8 x64, 1.9,2.0, and brand new downloaded and burned (checked disk integrity and md5sum) disks of ubuntu,(x64 and x86) and kubuntu. I am very disappointed with this apparently unsolvable problem. I have a fresh copy of 2.0 that I was going to install today, and at the end of the day all I've got is Vista. Don't get me wrong, I used MSft products up till XP, and still dual boot my desktop with xp and ubuntu, but I was really looking forward to seeing Compiz Fusion and Ultimate Edition running on this machine. Thee Mahn and his great group of admins and testers have always succeeded in putting together a really polished Distro. A "tip of the hat" to Mr Mahn. So all of you who are able to use the latest and probably the greatest (to date) ENJOY! Hopefully, somebody will figure out some sort of workaround for this dissappointment.
There are 3 things that happen when you start getting old. The first is your memory starts to go and I can't remember the other 2. Wait! What was I talking about?
