Cross-platform browser -or- Ultimate Edition on an iBook G4...? [Solved]

Gonna post this to OZ, as well, most likely. This seems a fitting place for it, here. My friend has given me an Apple iBook G4 to look at which he cannot get to browse the internet worth a hoot. Pages don't load, 404 errors...whatever. I had thought to go with Opera for him, or Chromium, but am having problems there, as well. I really know about next to nothing about using / navigating / investigating / The OS x system or the Hardware specs for this thing, either. It DOES connect to my wireless router fine. When I try to DL the Opera Browser for Mac, on the G4, itself, nothing happens using the IE browser (WHAAAA!!?!???!?!?! lol...puke browser/hate it!). Can anyone shed any light on how to get a good cross-platform Browser up and running in this OS, which is extremely foreign to me? That aside, if it does not happen I WAS wondering, and HAVE permission to try and get an Ubuntu or Ultimate Edition OS running on the machine, which I think would just be the coolest thing I could do for the guy, myself...any thoughts on that idea?

I used Macs ever since the Mac Plus with 2 floppy drives. My guess is that the Mac OS is toast and you need to start from scratch. Searching the web should be a piece of cake on a Mac. Hopefully you have a disk to return the Mac back to factory specs. If not you will need to go to Ebay and find the version your machine needs. Under the Apple icon select about this Mac, it will tell you what version your computer is using. Now as far as getting Linux on your G4, I wish you well on that. There are versions of linux distro's that will run on Power PC chips, including UBUNTU. But I have tried all of them with very limited success, and find they run slower than I would wish on the few times I managed to get a distro to install. So I have given up trying and I recently within the past 2 weeks found new homes for the last remaining G4 tower dual 550. I did however install Ultimate Edition 2.5 on a Mac laptop running with an Intel chip as a dual boot. <BREW> <BREW> dathem

There are PPC versions of Ubuntu. I booted my G4 iBook off a 10.04 live disk, so it is possible to run Ubuntu on a G4

Well, there is no install disk with the machine, and he said I should try Linux if I could not get a browser up and running well...and you don't have to tell me twice when it comes to showing someone else just how cool Ubuntu and Ultimate Edition can be. That being said, I'll just go with the plain vanilla 10.4 PPC, since billhedrick has already had it running on his G4...stick with what you know works is what I always say. Thanks dathem and bellhedrick, DLing the iso right now! Will post back asap... :P

Hello, Good luck, hope it works out well for you. Just in case you don't know, you will need to hold down the "C" key when starting up the Mac to get it to boot from the CD. <BREW> <BREW> dathem

Now I didn't do much with it, I am not sure I even tried the internet connection, but it does boot. So that's something

OK, coming at you FROM the iBook right now, and would reboot to see if the wireless drivers will take hold, but gotta duck out for a few....I sure wish I could get ultimatix for a ppc linux install, but oh well, that's just me, and it's not my lappy, though I'm a bit jealous...it's a lot faster responding than the OSx was, with a 1.33 GHz proc and a GIG of ram...not a shabby little iBook. SO...for now everything is very nice and smooth with the 10.04 fully updated ppc install. I'll get back about the wireless asap.

Thanks again, guys...I think he will LOVE this.

edit...had a little time...

Very cool! Fully wireless. Now I need to get Opera on this thing for him, and it will all be peachy! Later on that...calling this SOLVED.
