Could you please give us some more details about your system?
What OS version are you using, wireless card manufacturer, etc
Don't worry, we'll walk you through this problem
In the meantime you may want to try to read some here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WiFiHowTo

Perhaps you're missing the "wireless-tools" package?

If it connects without WEP then it should connect "with" WEP...sounds like you need to configure your router to "show" broadcast (I think that's the configuration) WRH54G is a Linksys, right??? I have a Linksys also, but have never bothered with WEP...I'm so far out in the sticks, no one can get close enough to connect, and if they did, they'd give up with my slow satellite connection  I'll look at the settings on mine :D
Edit: ok, open a browser, typ in 192.168.1.1 (assuming it's a Liknsys) them select the "Wireless" tab...if you have assigned a name to your connection, it should be listed in that box...then at the bottom there are to check boxes... 1 says SSID broadcast ...enable...the other...disable choose "Enable" choose that option...you may have to then go to your "Network Manager" and under wireless, select option to show "All" available networks, I can't remember exactly, and I don't have 1.9 installed anymore...anyway try those things

Do yourself a favor and buy hardware that has full Linux support. It will save you a lot of headaches.

You seem to have listed all your system specs, except the wireless card your computer uses, Windows installs everything for you, but you also pay through the nose for the OS, Linux is getting much better support now, bit still has a long way to go...that said, list your wireless card and have you installed drivers for it? There are so many wireless configurations, that linux doesn't include initially...be prepared to spend some time working out problems, but once you figure out what your system needs, things get much better :D

How about ndiswrapper. Isn't that for crappy wireless stuff?
