Normally if you get a login screen before you do the install, you have either a bad download (easily verified by checking MD5sum) or a bad burn. Did you burn the DVD at 4x or slower?

md5 is good. I tried to load oem "hardy" with same behavior. I'm thinking due to the fact that this is like the fifth different distro I've installed, maybe its something in the bootloader? Right before I started over the last time I had Ultimate Edition 2.0 as the only OS, then used my Seagate Disc Utility to do a quick reformat to NTFS and made two partitions one for xp(16GB) and one for Ultimate Edition 1.9(186GB), because I wanted the LTS. Xp loaded fine, then I went to install Ultimate Edition 1.9 and I checked the md5, burned it 4x, should be fine right? Thats when I got the user/password screen! I tried all my combinations I ever used and all the basics (root/root),(guest/guest) NOTHING! When I took liveCD out & rebooted I noticed that it hangs similar to the way GRUB does(blank screen with underscore at top right corner), but GRUB should not be on there yet, RIGHT? OEM "Hardy" does the same thing. I guess my next question is does he GRUB go on the hard drive or is it in the BIOS? Maybe the quick format did not get it all the way off. If it is on the drive, I can reset the drive to ZERO's and start over again if I have to, but It takes about 36 hours!!!!

Please Advise,
Thanks in Advance!

I've come across that too but if you look it's timing down and will start automatically or just hit the Enter key.

You may have a video issue here(or an optical drive one). Thr live disc should just automatically log you in. Maybe if you list your specs we can shed a little more light on the situation.

pch.shot is right. DVD drives are finicky creatures, even if your MD5sum matches and you burned the perfect disc (that has installed many a system) A drive may not work in one tower and perform like a champ in the next. Go figure! The difference between a 40 pin IDE cable and an 80 pin is not to be underestimated either.
It just takes one interrupted process or a daemon that won't start, to make gnome not load properly, then it wants to restart so gnome will load, and you're left at the login screen with no hopes of getting past it.
Frustrating stuff there.
