Gimp Installation Problems ( Solved ) + A How 2 (-;

Postby spd69kcrada » Sun Dec 21, 2008 7:39 am

whatsup ubunter's

I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.0.4.1 Ultimate Edition v1.9 Hardy and is running pretty good so far.

But my software package Gimp v2.45 and Gimp-Data was running fine before I think I messed it up so, only because I wanted to upgrade to a newer version Gimp v2.63
I downloaded all the packages from both getdeb.net and us.archive.ubuntu.com/pool
and gimp v2.61 and Gimp v2.62 and none of these will work or compile from source
however Gimp v2.62 did install ok but the program will not run when clicking on gimp
to run acts as if its going to start and just closes with no error or nothing on the desktop. I have even tried putting the old Gimp v2.45 which is what was installed and it will not work either?? So now I'm Gimpless :) I need to find a way to get this back up and running I would like to have v2.63 the latest version or v2.62 will be ok I suppose
So where is the needed packages I'm needing I do not understand why is was there v2.45 running ok but now can't get any Gimp to work.??? What do I need to do to make this work again? Gimp needs the proper packages outlined and compiled as .deb files
so that the install will work correctly.?? Hopefully someone could help me out ???

Thanks
peace ....
Robert

P.S I have even tagged Gimp v2.45 in synaptic but the libgtk2.0-0 is installed but it complains of one or the other like libcario which is also installed.
Also this is and offline machine @ home.

Any suggestions or a why to bypass or get it running again would be appreciated.

Go to /usr/bin or usr/sbin and click on the binary for Gimp there. If that works, change the reference(under properties) in the menu editor. Sometimes the installer places the binary in sbin instead of bin. Sometimes it will place it elsewhere for some unknown reason!! If that does not work check the depedencies for the new Gimp: http://packages.debian.org/experimental/gimp

Well I tried the above suggestion and did not work however when i just type in gimp
it runs but very old version 2.22 I never installed this at all, However I did gather the files at the above web site from debian and I uninstalled gimp v2.62 and installed the gimp v2.6.3-1 from debian all installed ok no problems using synaptic. But when I go to the menu/graphics launch Gimp acts as if its going to load but then nothing happens??
Not sure as to what to do with it uninstall all of it tried variuos versions of gimp but still no go ??? is there a complete package of 2.6.2 or later that is complete that will work
even tried source still no go ... Further investigation to find out what happen?
cause I'm not sure.

Thanks for your help
Ubuntu Repos at us.archive.ubuntu.com/pool needs some updates bad gimp being one of them plus more.

ok so to successfully install gimp is Gimp v2.6.3-1 and the Gimp-Data and Gimp-Extras
as long as you have everything else on system??

When you run programs, watch videos, play games, etc, who use to many system resources or at least graphic resources,it's better to disable the compiz. From compiz-fusion icon choose metacity as window decorator. <BREW>

What'sup

Well guys/gals I'm not gimpless and you will not be either :) see below

This is what I did, I did not however disable Compiz at all, I went to http://www.getdeb.net and d/l'ed these files :> gimp_2.6.3-1~getdeb1_all,
gimp_2.6.3-1~getdeb1_i386, gimp-data-extras2.0.1-3_all, libgimp2.0_2.6.3-1~getdeb1_i386. However I did not use them at the time b/c gimp would not
run anyway.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Debian has and experimental version as well, which is what I used
d/l these files :> gimp-2.6.3-1_i386, gimp-data_2.6.3-1_all, gimp-data-extras-2.0.1-3_all, libgimp2.0_2.6.3-1_i386, libpoppler3_0.8.7-1_i386, libpoppler-glib3_0.8.7-1_i386.
However do keep in mind that it is experimental or you can get them from http://www.getdeb.net, Also I noticed that in the repos on http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gimp/ v2.6.3 is available.
Just download your gimp from any of the above and all should work fine.
However do keep in mind that if you use the Experimental Gimp v2.6.3-1 you may need other packages from there as well just download those packages needed and when you go to install Gimp it will tell you if something else is needed go d/l it and follow that until you have all files then do your install. Install any additional packages you may need
or want and whola !!!

Now you have Gimp v2.6.3-1 and not gimpless :)
-
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another note is that the Gimpshop is well toast because you will need to uninstall all gimp and gimpshop this is what I did, Restart machine then go to the gimp files you d/l'ed and run the gimp install after all is done .... restart for all changes to take effect ... however I'm, sure you probally do not have to restart But I did just for configurations and update to cache etc...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had read somewhere on the forums that the AWN Manager was the cause or issue/problem with gimp this is not true at least not for me. SO if you do have this installed and it works fine DO NOT REMOVE IT ( I DID NOT) However I have confirmed on my Rig that the gimpshop was causing the Gimp (no matter the version down to gimp v2.45 and up I could not get gimp to run .... So be sure you un-install GIMPSHOP.
However I'm sure there is a way for both to co-exist but use the one you like the most
GIMP ROCKS.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this is sraight forward enough for all the new nooobies to understand and for all others as well. Good luck and get to gimping

oh here is a few screenshots of all of gimp v2.6.3-1(exprimental) and AWN Manger running on Ultimate Edition v1.9 (Ubuntu Hardy) v8.0.4

Good Luck
....peace
