Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

I want to install newer apps than are in ubuntu repo...

Postby brjoon1021 » Tue Nov 18, 2008 1:32 pm

Hi,

Love Ultimate Edition. Not always as enthralled with the fact that the ubuntu repos sometimes contain old versions of apps.

For example, I need a decent accounting software. Most people recommend GnuCash. Version 2.7 has been released and the repos have 2.4 (three releases behind). Here there is a PPA not quite sure what that is, but I can apparently install the application package, however it is a version old too.

https://launchpad.net/~gnucash/+archive

There are tar and tar.gz packages available but I don't think that i could get that installed right.

What do you suggest ?

The cool thing about launchpad is the PPA repos they offer for developers.

Just add the launchpad PPA repos to your repo list and install gnucash with synaptic:
Open Software Sources (System/ Administration/ Software Sources)
Type in your password when asked
Select Third-Party Software
Hit the Add button
Copy & paste these lines one at a time, Hit Add Source after entering each line.
Code: Select all
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnucash/ubuntu hardy main

Code: Select all
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnucash/ubuntu hardy main

when you close the window it will bring up the Software sources is out of date window,
Hit the Reload button, it will update your repo list and close the windows.

Next time you go to Synaptic you will notice you have the latest Stable version of anything gnucash related, available to install. The benefit of doing it this way, besides being quicker, is the ability to get updates as soon as they hit the repo, by using the update manager or synaptic.

Anything listed in Launchpad can be installed this way, by simply adding the apt source list entries
for the OS you are using.
