upgrading to 8.10

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

upgrading to 8.10

Postby andrey » Sat Oct 25, 2008 11:16 am

First i wish to thank you for making this wonderful edition of Ubuntu !
Since i installed it it is running smooth and steady and i have no issues with it whatsoever ! I can see that lots of thought and patience went into making it !
Now i have just one question i was not able to find direct enough answer for my simple mind .
Can i safely upgrade to 8.10 when it is ready in a week or so without hosing my current install .Since great deal of tweaking went in my current setup i am not really looking forward to complete reinstall . So if upgraded is a no -go i will just not fix what ain't broke and stay with it until next ULTIMATE is out .

Sincerely Andrey ! :D

There is always a risk when you upgrade. When you upgrade you are using the internet!! What if the power goes out? I just upgraded yesterday. Never be afraid to take a chance. The more times you install and tweak, the faster you will become. If you can't remember what you tweak write it down.
p.s. The upgrade took 3 hours(that's with 512 fast internet). I can re-install in 20 minutes and have everthing back up to snuff in another 40 minutes!!!

Thanks for quick replay ,friend !
I am not so concerned with power outage and such as i am concerned with system differences between 8.04 and 8.10 . Are there enough differences between Ultimate Edition and vanilla Ubuntu to prevent system upgrade ? Also today i will be making backup of my home folder and i have most tweaks in text file in how to folder , so as long as everything goes by the book all should be well .
Thanks for your time and advice ! :D

You can always make an image of your hard drive, store it somewhere, and then if something goes wrong just replace the image. Personally, I don't see much difference after my upgrade. The sound is a little better and the network a bit faster. Other than my usplash disappearing, everything seems about the same.

You won't have to wait too long(5 more days for the new Ubuntu and shorly after that the new Ultimate). I just did it to see how long it would take and because I have never upgraded Ubuntu that way before. I doubt I will do it again considering how long it took!!!

Speaking on upgrading, is Ultimate 2.0 based on Hardy or Interpid?

Figrued, just wanted to be sure. I have Ultimate Edition only installed on the desktop and was waiting for Intrepid to come out to install it on the laptops. Now that I know 2.0 will be out soon I can wait and knock out two birds with one stone.

By the way, Ultimate Edition makes my life way easier. I repair and build computers on the side. This thing is perfect for it. I don't have to make my own distro now!!! Not only that, you would be floored by the amount of people I have "converted" by showing them my watercooled desktop using Ultimate Edition and packed with Compiz effects. They look like kids in a candy store! :D

Although I'm a diehard Gnome fanboy, the new Enlightenment has some eye-popping effects of it's own.
Worth a look see. supposed to run fast too.
