I would try re downloading it from the main site and try again. It smells a little fishy that you would be required to enter a user name and password from the Live DVD.

No apology necessary...

Okay the GPartEd thing is not a bad idea, but I'm still confused why an installer is dropping you to a GDM. Either I'm not understanding something, or there is something else going wrong here.

At any rate, letting GPartEd do it's thing isn't going to hurt. Let it run, boot to your LiveDVD of Ultimate and it should take you to a desktop if you choose the "LiveDVD" option. From the desktop that you should be on at that point simply click on the "Install" icon on the desktop and choose the "Use Entire Disk" option if you're 100% CERTAIN you want to totally and irrevocably WIPE OUT your Windows install and replace it with Ultimate Edition.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.

Agreed. Something's not right and the burn is about the only thing I can think of.

When this login screen appears, describe what it looks like. It sounds like it is kicking you into a backup gdm. It will do this if it can't start X properly. If it has flowers and is blue that's what it is doing meaning it does not like your video card.

Ultimate Edition 1.9 took a long time to completely load the live DVD on my system.
It took so long that I thought maybe it had stalled.
How long did you wait before you decided it had stalled?

Your Nvidia fx5500 should be fine.
On the other box, your Nvidia 8800GTS should also be fine but you might have problems with your Ati HD2900.
AND trying to run both of them at the same time will most likely give you problems as well.
Try running just the Nvidia 8800 and see if it gives you the same issues.

What monitor are you using?
some of the newer monitors can give you issues.

Something else that has caused install problems with a few users is not using an 80 conductor IDE cable.

Is your DVD drive IDE or Sata?
1st Box: Ultimate Edition 2.0 x64/ 1.8 x64
2nd Box: XP (dusty)
3rd Box: Stable Media box Ultimate Edition 1.8 x64 with XBMC
