I'm curious if you can use the DVD for a Live session. Don't try to install Ultimate, just use the "Live" option from the DVD, and see where that gets you. I'm thinking if the LiveDVD works then, yes, we may be looking at a hardware fault of some kind. Maybe this has been addressed in the thread somewhere but I scanned it over and I didn't see this option being mentioned...
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.

I would try installing Ubuntu Hardy Heron using the different boot options first and then do what Timeless Rogue suggests. Do that and then post back. There is no point in giving up at this point. Too much time has been invested by all.
Here is the link:
http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download
If I can get Hardy Heron to run on a PIII w/320 megs of ram and a ten year old maxtor 6 gig hard drive then you should have no problems.
p.s. Use Nero with Windows to burn your Ubuntu cd. It has not failed me yet.

For about 6 month ago I used several days trying to install eAOS - a Ubuntu based media center - on an "old" PC with Asus Motherboard, Sempron 2600 Cpu, 2Gb ram & 160Gb HD. I had Win XP Pro on it before with no problems but when i tried to install eAROS, install stopped - and in a different place each time. I then tried to replace the components one by one and it turned out to be a fault in the Motherboard that only Win could live with. A new Mothb. and it worked just fine. :D

I don't know about the rest of you, but did you notice the signature? 8-cores! That is freak'n sweet! Honestly, I'm not positive what Hardy will handle in the amount of cores. Maybe installing or running the Server Edition of Ubuntu?

I found this on the Ubuntu forum, although this guy talks more code than the back of a 'My Book' ... so I'm not sure of the answer, but this very well could be your issue to getting things going.

Code: Select all
Code:

 cat /boot/config-2.6.24-19-generic | grep  NR_CPUS

change config-2.6.24-19-generic to fit your current running kernel.

Even despite what Ubuntu supports, it's easy enough to recompile the kernel.

I believe the short answer you're looking for is 8.
Which typically this would be dual quads.

For 4way configurations you need AMD Opteron 8 series, and MP Capable XEONs.

It is theoretically possible to modify the kernel to work in a NUMA based architecture with high-speed interconnects to create a somewhat virtual SMP environment without special Opterons or XEONs, at that point you'd definitely need a custom kernel. (vSMP)

when the disk boots up to the menu, hit F6 and type vga=791
if it doesn't work then, select F4, and select Safe video values.
no probs. this works for all cd or dvd so-called Live Editions (depending on the F-key assigned)

luck --O.
