Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.8

I require assistance please with an issue when I play video

Postby Zynn » Wed Aug 27, 2008 4:16 am

Hello...

Over the past couple days I have been working to install Ultimate 1.8 after having tried other installations that have failed for one reason or another (usually something graphic).

Anyway, after many hours on Google, I have finally got my install up and running fine with the latest NVIDIA drivers for my 6800 GT. I've even figured out how to get the dual screen setup to work. I may sound proud because I am a Linux n00b, so this may sound petty to some of you, but to me, a long-time windows user new to Linux, this means a lot and is an accomplishment worth mentioning.

Anyway, I have another issue I would like resolved and I have already exhausted Google. Frankly, I'm not sure what to put into the search box.

When I play a video on the wide screen monitor (see my system specs in my sig), every few seconds, there will be a horizontal line moving up my screen. The line looks like someone sliced the video and shifted it slightly to the side. This is pretty annoying and I would really love for it to be resolved. The monitor works fine when I am booted into Windows XP SP 3 and with my Vista 64 system I also have hooked up to it that I can switch to via the "source" button.

Please help... I am at your mercy... :)

The following is my xorg.conf file:

Welcome to Ultimate Edition..since video is not my strongest points..will try to help you anyways, any one else out there please help.
Did you install your card driver using Envy..you might want to try changing the refresh rate or even changing the resolution,,what are they set at now..

Edit: Wow missed your setting in the signature..OK so excuse my ignorance are you running two monitors? If so have you just tried running one..and still getting the same effect?

Just to add to Cowboys thoughts.. Aside from trying to run video when only using one monitor, There are some issue I've seen about video/games when running Compiz Fusion.

Another thing to check on is what type of video was it again? I'm scrolling up in case you said so but dont see it at a glance. If its shockwave, java or one of those types make sure you have installed the restricted drivers and the Java as well Thee Mahn tried to include drivers that were "free", anything that requires you to accept use like java and flash cant be preinstalled, so he used Gnash and... the other one escapes my mind this morning. So a quick recap

1) install restricted drvers
2) turn off Compiz when watching videos
3) remove gnash install flash
4) reviewing your post leads me to ask, have you verified your monitors refresh rates? most 22"flatpanel displays only like 60hz at the 1650x1080 res.

Hello again... Here is an update...

Ok, I have the latest drivers installed via envyng -g

The monitors are set up using TwinView.

The video I was trying to play was an avi. After more experimentation, I have discovered that the issue isn't restricted to only video. I can take any window, like a firefox browser, for example, and slightly wiggle it from side to side and I will start to see the horizontal slice traveling up the screen. When one slice has finished the journey to the top of the screen, a new one will start from the bottom.

Maybe the following bit of info will help someone assist me:
When I tried the "Separate X Screen" mode, it was fine. I do not need separate X screens, I want to be able to move programs from one screen to the other. So whatever happens to the configuration of the widescreen monitor in this mode is what I need to happen in TwinView mode.

Also, it was brought to my attention that I may have posted this topic in the wrong section. I was under the impression that since I am new here, that this is where I was to post this. For all I knew, maybe this was some newbie error..

If an admin or mod feels that I can be better helped in a different section of your forums, please feel free to move my post... :)

Thank you for the move, Drama1981. :)

Something I wanted to add is that my video card is an AGP card. I just noticed in the xorg.conf that it refers to a PCI bus. Does that mean that X Server thinks the card is a PCI card, or does it treat the first head as an AGP bus and the second head as a PCI bus? Still I see no reference to AGP in the xorg.conf. NVIDIA X Server Settings recognizes the card as an AGP 8x card.

I just don't understand why it would be working fine in "Separate X Screen" mode.

The refresh ranges are in-line with the factory technical specs of the monitor.

do something for me: hold down alt key, hit f2 (alt-f2) :P then type
Code: Select all
metacity --replace
, and try running your video through again.

Hello Vinca.

I have done what you instructed and it didn't fix the issue. The upward-traveling horizontal line is still present. All it did was remove that cool elastic window effect.

How do I undo the "metacity --replace" command and get it back to how it was?
[edit] Nevermind I see it returns after rebooting the system.

Thank you for trying. I look forward to more ideas. :)

Howdy Zynn...when it was working configured for separate X screen, did it modify your xorg.conf file?? if so, then could you not compare the two files and see what's different??
