Hopefully will finish this fast and no one takes any offense as always my information is meant to help. Yesterday after Ultimate dumped, I learned some valuable information for those in college. As of present I am in my 4th semester for an Associates in BIT. This semester I am working on Java and Cisco Packet Tracer. Am tired of using Windoze for it as I think is the primary reason I dumped! Of course, Ultimate 3.4 took a severe beating in my progression of learning before it failed! Any other OS would have died in a day or two. Ultimate survived a good 3 months of my beating it to a pulp! Hey, am not Einstein, I make terrible decisions at times!!!! Anyway back to what this topic really is. First if you are going to use the jdk for java development, it has to be downloaded. Your instructor/Professor should have given you the proper link. After installation you have to change permissions when you use it for your school work. _BE ADVISED: You have to turn the permission back to automatic after you do your work! If not, when you reboot you will get system error message. Remember Ultimate 3.4 is highly dependent on java. Of course is just one of the few stupid things I have done!!!! Anyway follow above advice and this copy paste I found last night:
"Choosing the default Java to use
If your system has more than one version of Java, configure which one your system uses by entering the following command in a terminal window
sudo update-alternatives --config java
This will present you with a selection that looks similar to the following (the details may differ for you):
There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java).
Selection Path Priority Status
————————————————————
* 0 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java 1061 auto mode
1 /usr/lib/jvm/jre1.7.0/jre/bin/java 3 manual mode
Press enter to keep the current choice[*], or type selection number: 1"
Next is Cisco Packet Tracer. After downloading at Cisco Net Academy through your terminal enter the "sudo nautilus" command. Go to the file change the file permissions that list your name and scroll to root. Change the -------- permission line with the drop downs to access for the two. After that should be able to just click on it and will install through the terminal. Of course you have to scroll through all the lines of permission to once again enter "y" in the terminal to agree to installation. Once the terminal completes, Cisco Packet Tracer will be listed under Applications=Internet on the taskbar. Much easier to find than even "WIndoze". In fact is just another one of million reasons, I love Ultimate and the severe "Brilliance" of it!!!!
It will always be in my hopes that others can come to this point in development as the development team of Ultimate has!!!! Ease of use and dependability! These developers listened deeply to all our cries for that!!!! I hope you developers always get everything you want and have everything perfect for you!!!! Always my heart felt thanks for making an OS we can learn, play and enjoy!!! This is what real computing is about people!
Also will ask if there is anyone seeking the above knowledge will be properly linked. Thanks for the best and long may your team succeed in every endeavor you encounter!!!!
