Firewall: printing/file-sharing networking issue [SOLVED]

Firewall / printing & file-sharing networking problem:

Ultimate Edition Release 3.0 (natty) 32-Bit is installed on my older HP Pavilion dv1000 notebook.
It seems to be a nice OS ...with my 1st major problem, however...

I cannot network the Ultimate Edition 3.0 (HP notebook) with our (3) other computers on the network, which are two (2) MS Windows 7
Home 64-Bit desktops and one (1) MS Windows XP 32-Bit (Samsung) netbook.

All software firewalls on the MS Windows units are the latest (free) version of ZoneAlarm.

I wish to file-share w/ each Windows unit, and I wish to utilize one of three printers (using 32-Bit printer drivers).

I was able to accomplish file-sharing & printer-sharing (via forum help) in Linux Mint version 11 (Katya). I was not able to do so with Mint version 12 (Lisa). No one in the Mint forum came forward for the Mint 12 issue.

Thank you much in advance!

Check your Firewall settings first. Does your router have a firewall on it?
I hope this helps(see screenies). That is Ultimate running in vmware player from xp.

TO: "pch.shot"--

Thanks for replying! :)

Yes! My Linksys Router is a hardware firewall.

I disabled Ultimate Edition's on-board software firewall and I'm now able to share files and acquire a network (32-Bit drivers) printer - might even be able to acquire the 64-Bit printer ...don't know yet?! (I've got to go get dinner while it is still hot! :) I'll be back, though.) So (quickly), am I to understand that I cannot use Ultimate Edition's on-board software firewall??? Even w/ the router's hardware firewall, not using an additional software firewall makes me a little nervous?!

Thanks, again!

I think they have a website that you can change your settings on line.Don't quote me on that.
Try this:

...Well, I don't know what the heck happened?!

I shut-down the Ultimate Edition notebook while having supper. Afterwards, I came-back, fired-up the Ultimate Edition notebook and tried to network on the LAN, again. Now I am getting a window that says: "Unable to mount location" & "Failed to retrieve share list from server."

The network printer that I had acquried earlier still appears as an icon in Printers for Ultimate Edition, but I'm now unable to connect. I had earlier printed-out a test page - I can't do it, now!

All I did was, in effect, perform a "cold boot" and nothing more. The other MS WIN 7 64-Bit desktop that the printer is USB'd to wasn't touched while this activity took place.

What in the heck happened??? How can this be resolved? It looked really promising in the beginning!

Once again, thanks for any help in advance!

@ 'pch.shot,' please: "I eat cigarettes now. It saves having to leave your computer." You're gonna' die! Don't do that! ...Just kidding! :D Really, though, find some substantial food.

Anyway, I checked that web site link that you had provided and my laptop (HP Pavilion dv1000) isn't included. Which is probably a good thing ...I think?!

The other thing is, when I ran Mint v/11 (Katya) for a few months on the same notebook, once that the on-board Mint firewall was configured properly (w/ substantial help from their Mint forum - I couldn't have done it alone) Mint v/ 11 networked flawlessly using both file-sharing and LAN printer functions. So, I am genuinely puzzled, especially in view of the fact that for a short time I WAS able to accomplish those functions w/ Ultimate Edition, today. This is weird!!!

But, otherwise, I really like Ultimate Edition a lot! It is far more powerful and stable than jus plain Mint, I think, anyway. I just hope I can get past this issue ...which, is a major one for me!

Once again, thanking all contributors in advance!

Other than just flat-out telling the truth ...which is what I've got to do, I did probably the biggest - dumbest, most stupid blunder you folks have heard. When I fired-up the Ultimate Edition notebook after dinner and then looked to network on the LAN I failed to realize that the wireless network was not activated - I was running off-line! After now noticing it and getting on-line it works, of course - I am able to netwok on our LAN ...stupid ...stupid ...stupid! And, I'm sorry, 'pch.shot!' :(

Now, having most-reluctantly admitting that, dare I ask if the Ultimate Edition on-board software firewall can still be utilized and keep the LAN "fluid?"

(I wouldn't blame you, 'pch.shot,' if you didn't respond?!)

Course, really, I'm not used to a computer not automatically going on-line, either. But, I'll get used to it NOW!!!

(Sheepishly...) Thanks in advance!
