Replacing 10.10 with ultimate edition 2.8

Postby yo5he » Mon Mar 28, 2011 10:55 pm

I currently have ubuntu 10.10 Meerkat installed on my laptop in a dual-boot configuration with Windows 7. Id like to know if I can replace 10.10 with ultimate edition 2.8, and if so, how would I go about achieving this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, first of all back up your home folder. something you will be happy to see is that probably every program you have added to 10.10 is already in 2.9. and more! Then, you can do one of 2 things, if you have enough HD space, you can create a partition and install Ultimate Edition and triple boot! But IMHO, the best thing to do is to boot off the live disk and replace 10.10 with Ultimate Edition 2.9.

Thank You it worked. However now I seemed to have lost my windows partition :( It will not let me log into it and is saying that I need the CD because the device cannot be found. I assume from here I just download the iso and burn to disk then insert it and reinstall on the same partition? I don't know what happened but yea any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Windows first

Then Linux, let grub it's job

If you installed Ultimate Edition 2.9 over your ubuntu 10.10 and it was a side by side.

The only chance you have is to use the windows disk and try to recover via repair option built into the windows disk.

If it was not side by side, each on there own partitions or drives.

A simple
Code: Select all
Sudo update-grub2

Should work to rebuilt grub and get your dual boot back in order.

Might even need to do both.

Not a fan of side by side for dual boot. Keep windows on it's own partitions or drives preferably. Makes it far easier to wipe and install newer versions of Linux.

Then grub will just auto detect your windows partition and configure during install of the new distro.

Ok so I tried both the grub update as well as the disc repair however nothing seems to work. It will not even let me do a fresh install on the partition that used to have windows on it. Im thinking my next step would be to try and go through linux ie. gparted and either format or delete the windows partition? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Ok so I am at a point where I am stuck. I have windows installed but now no linux. In GParted this is what my partitions look like:
/dev/sda
/dev/sda1 ntfs 10.8MB
/dev/sda2 ntfs 312GB
free space 316GB
/dev/sda5 11.4GB

I want to install linux on the free space partition, however the installation utility is not allowing me to and is showing the sda2 ntfs partition instead. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

In the installation utility, select manual partitioning. There you will see all partitions and free space. Partition the free space with 3GB swap and the rest as /. that will put linux in the place you want it and grub will find your windows and add it to your boot options.
