fsck/fstab issues

Postby ninhalo5 » Sat Oct 23, 2010 1:45 pm

Hi all, I'm having issues with fsck running every time at startup which I wouldn't mind if it didn't take 20 minutes to complete and then it reboots the system so I'm forever finding myself hitting C a minute or so into the boot to get it canceled. How can I fix this issue?
I've read about disabling it by adding a 0 somewhere but not exactly sure where the 0 goes. here is what my fstab looks like:
Code: Select all
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    nodev,noexec,nosuid 0       0
# / was on /dev/sda3 during installation
UUID=3019db64-2bf2-41ef-961d-710f38364927 /               ext2    errors=remount-ro 0       1
# swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=29c86341-c029-4216-9633-49b133f38d85 none            swap    sw              0       0

And my rcS looks like this:
Code: Select all
#
# /etc/default/rcS
#
# Default settings for the scripts in /etc/rcS.d/
#
# For information about these variables see the rcS(5) manual page.
#
# This file belongs to the "initscripts" package.

TMPTIME=0
SULOGIN=no
DELAYLOGIN=no
UTC=no
VERBOSE=no
FSCKFIX=no

which the last line is already set to no.

aside from getting the fsck to stop on every boot is there a way I can copy what it's doing so I can post it to get the issue fixed if there is one?

Thank you

Here is some more info I picked up from fdisk
Code: Select all
jeff@jeff-Laptop:~$ sudo fdisk -l
[sudo] password for jeff:

Disk /dev/sda: 200.0 GB, 200049647616 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 24321 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xd4fb452f

   Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1   *           1        6374    51199123+   7  HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2            6375        6733     2883637    5  Extended
/dev/sda3            6734       24321   141275610   83  Linux
/dev/sda5            6375        6733     2883636   82  Linux swap / Solaris

I found the error that's causing the fsck is /dev/sda3 was not cleanly unmounted then it goes to a long stretch of Delete inode 754053 has zero dtime (where 754053 keeps changing until it's done about 100 lines)
I'm not sure what any of that means, though it sounds like something is going wrong during shutdown. I generally always shutdown using the shutdown button in the menu.
