How to Change Login/Boot/Cursor? [Ultimate Edition 2.7 (Gnome)]

Postby mooshimuushi » Tue Sep 14, 2010 4:33 am

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this open-source operating system...so there's a lot to learn! (for me)

When I first download Ultimate Edition, The first thing I wanted to change was the boot loading page.
With the red ultimate edition icon thingy.

The second thing I wanted to change was the Login screen. It was okay, but the coloring...just...yeah.

The third thing I wanted to change was the mouse cursor. It isn't bad...it's just that...it doesn't fit among
my color themes.

I've tried many things to change all three of these things and had to reformat my computer 6 times...=.="
I know...like I said, I'm still new to this great operating system.

Login Screen

The first thing I tried to do to change the login, was to install GDM 2.0.
Ultimate Edition already gave me GDM 3.4.0 (or something like that).
So to install GDM 2.0, i thought I might un-install 3.4.0.
I did that...installed 2.0...and reformatted my computer :D
Why? Because I couldn't login!

It gave me this long pause...and never allowed me to login...so that's my adventure with
the login screen.

Cursor

I've read many threads to find a way to change my cursor.

Compiz...
Apperance...
Xcursor (In-built)

but none of them ever worked out for me...

Compiz, I couldn't find the mouse selection.

Apperance...I could change it, but it didn't fully change it. The cursor turned to the cursor I wanted when I placed it over firefox, but went back to normal when I placed it over my desktop...or any other.

Xcursor...never helped at all...
I pressed "Install Theme" and "Go to theme folder". None of the selection did anything. The program just sat there... logged out and logged back in...nothing!

So, I'm hoping someone within the open-source community with this tiny (but huge -for me-) problem.

Thank in advance~
Mooshimuushi~

Hello mooshimuushi and welcome to the U.E Forum.

First I will say this is the cost of the new user way on Linux. ;)
Format and formate once again and learning the system.
now about the Cursor=>System=>Preferences=>Cursor settings.
There you will find the options to install Different time for the Cursor.

now you can find some fix for the issue from TheeMahn, Stanca ,JOHNNYG with How to fix the bug,
yes this was bug with the themes.
just use the search for the Team and you will find the Answer for it.
I just hope that you have install the new Ubuntu Tweak on your machine - so you will find the Cursor option
you can download the new package from the Ubuntu tweak.com site.

about changing the boot screen- way? this is the U.E boot screen.
anyway you can change it from => System => Admin=> Log in screen setting.

on the Compiz issue first you will need to go to the Compiz setting manager tab in the Ubuntu Tweak.
there you have to mark the simple settings and it will install new package for you.
then you can use the Desktop Effects on your machine, After you have configure the Compizconfig setting manager in,
System=>Preferences=>Compizconfig setting manager.

Thank you for the reply Admin-Amir,

The method on changing the mouse cursor is somewhat correct, just that when ever I place my mouse over firefox. I get the cursor I have selected. Place the mouse some where else other then firefox and it will go back to the old, default gold cursor.

Thank you for the suggestion on searching up the BUG problem.
I was wondering if you can post a link to the thread?

Hope your method on changing the boot screen works ;D

Thank you for the heads up on the update of the Compiz, but that wasn't what I was searching for, or well ;D

Thank you again Admin-Amir!

I eventually found out how to do it before this, but this helped me understand what I was doing :D

By the way, the method that you told me on "How to change the Login scree" wasn't what I was searching for.
When I go into the System --> Administration --> Login Screen, this only allowed me to change my session.
I was trying to find out if I can change the login appearance and background ;)

.::EDIT::.

Looks like I found a way to change the Login screen (also known as GDM2? or GTK)

Hmm, seems like I can't change the login "theme". I don't have "Login Windows"...
Do you know where to download this?

Hello mooshimuushi .

can you log in to your system from any kind?
OR there is no log in at all not the box and not the down bar?
you can try safe mode / command prompt :
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

if you can use the safe mode then, use the root user with:
Code: Select all
gksudo nautilus

brows to your home folder , then under view mark the show hidden foldes.
Then look for your user name folder for => .bash_history,
right click on the folder => open with text Editor and copy all the doc into the terminal and past there.
This will fix your machine back after you will restart the machine.
