install Ultimate Edition from usb hard drive

Postby JaSoN369 » Sat Aug 14, 2010 8:43 pm

Is it possible to insall Ultimate Edition from a usb or esata hard drive? I have success with usb flash drive and using rymastersys to make a backup iso.. what i'm tying to do is --- when i use rymastersys i can make a complete backup and i only have a 120gb ssd in my laptop and have a 300gb external hdd (usb or esata) i would like to use as a system backup. If i use start up disk creator it says Failed to install the bootloader. and if i use UNitbooten it loads on the hdd but when i reboot my laptop to install it says missing bootmgr. so is this possible and if so can some one tell my how or show me where a good Tutorial is on this? I could not find one that said i could do this nor did i one say i could not.

Thanks Jason

Hello JaSoN369

Here is the solution for your issue kexec-loader is a Linux based bootloader.
http://www.solemnwarning.net/kexec-loader/

all you have to do is install grub on the usb stick, and put your /boot partition and kernels on the usb stick as well.

when you boot from usb, grub can then load the kernel normally (from hd0 == usb), detect your devices, mount the root partition (from /dev/sdx == esata), and start the system init process...

If all you wonna do a to ensure you have a full backup then Clonezilla is a good option. I use it for all my imaging needs.

Mazal : that's is exactly what I want to do but also load from a external hdd. I'll have to check this out after work. The thing is I'm still new to Ultimate Edition or Ubuntu so I like to continue to make backups because sometimes I tinker around and feel like I did something wrong and its just easier to load a backup then fix what I did wrong. Thanks for the help.

That is exactly what Clonzilla does. Makes a full image of your drive. And you can put back a full image if things goes horribly wrong or your drive breaks down.
Works with USB and to a network share.

Putting back the image is just as easy as making one. The program boots and run of a live cd and you do everything from there. Making images and restoring images.
