Newb install question [SOLVED]

Postby theology » Sat May 08, 2010 11:29 am

Hi Guys
ty for developing Ultimate Edition it is going to save me a lot of frustration i think.
My question is simple how do install Ultimate Edition alongside or inside windows, i have Ubuntu 9.10 on my system now and when Ifound Ultimate Edition , i hightailed it straight to the d/l section. I need to keep windows on my machine so want a dual os and really liked the idea of installation inside windows. I burnt the Ultimate Edition dvd mounted it and got the demo but no option to install inside windows, any help or advice is appreciated.
Once again thank you for such a great distro.

well you have 2 options, the Ubuntu installer will let you format part of your hard drive and install it in the new partition. When you start up again you will get a window where you can choose which OS you want to use at the time (we call this the 'grub' loader) There is also a program called wubi http://wubi-installer.org/ that will let you install it from within windows.

Welcome to the forum

If you're looking to install inside windows then yes the wubi installer is what you want. I have never done it that way but many people do.

I wasn't aware there's no wubi in 2.6. Are you sure?
While running windows slide the livedvd in and you should get an option to install it inside windows using wubi. It would then install it like you would install a program.

I'm surprised. I'll see what I can find out about it. It may have had issues that weren't resolved before release so they left it out. I know there was a call for wubi testers a while back. Meanwhile maybe someone that already knows will post.

Ok, hold on there a minute. First you're wanting a wubi and now you're going a full install on it's own partition dual boot setup (my preferred method by the way).

Do you want a wubi install in windows?
A full dual boot install to hard drive?

If the latter we need to prepare the disk for the install to prevent problems and make it all work smoothly.

Looks like they totally changed wubi. I'm going to have to see what if any option there is for using it to install Ultimate Edition. It looks like it's now tied directly to regular ubuntu and it downloads it and installs it. :?

What version of windows do you have installed?
If it's windows 7 here's a guide for you:

Hello, here is a graphical instruction which should help you, this is for UBUNTU 10.04 but the install of Ultimate Edition 2.6 will be the same. Please scroll down to the install on a hard drive section. You want to follow the # 1 option. install along side windows.
