Newbie incoming!

Hello everyone, its exciting to see a community of people passionate about their freedom in computing. I am a fairly new Linux user. I've got some (very little) experience with Linux. I've briefly used knoppix and mandrake in the past, but my busy lifestyle and laziness prevented me from sticking with it for too long. I understand the basic framework and theory behind Linux and can move around fairly proficiently.

I've come back with Ubuntu's 10.04 release and have spent some hours reading, experimenting, succeeding and failing and realized I need a community of like-minded folks to fellowship with and maybe help point me in the right direction when i get lost.

I've installed Lucid once, installed the generic nVidia drivers, the restricted software package(or so i thought), a few eyecandy packages, wine, mkv2vob, and a few other media packages, and noticed some serious laggy video and really screwed up trying to remove the eyecandy software myself.

So, now I'm back to square one, formatted and reinstalled Lucid. I've installed the recommended nvidia drivers and noticed that afterwards, the ubuntu splash screen when booting is a lower resolution and my videos are still choppy and unwatchable, however my wobbly windows are working great and my multiple desktop viewer shortcuts are working (windows key+E).

Now before I screw up anything else, I need to know where to start to get it working correctly. I'm not running on a newer system. Here is a lshw -short of my system. I'm supposed to have 2gb of RAM, but I think its only reading 1gb of it.

And what an entrance...had me laughing before the link even loaded. Welcome DdotSpot.

Splash screen resolution
System > Administration > Startup Manager
set the resolution and depth you want on the first tab and resolution again on the second tab.

(windows key+E) no, no, no we call that the super key and you can get a ubuntu sticker to put over the windows logo for free from here:
