Some clarifications required from the experts of Ultimate Edition

Postby cannon_dt » Fri Feb 06, 2009 7:59 am

Hi,
I am new entrant to the world of FOSS and I am currently using Ubuntu's Intrepid Ibex. After seeing all the videos and write ups about Ultimate Edition and being somewhat of a gamer (an amateur only!), I was immediately taken in by the Ultimate Edition gamer's edition. It is currently downloading (being in India the torrent would probably take a week to finish off :( !!!). Anyways I had 2 questions before I make the move to Ultimate Edition
1. My internet worked without any configuration at all when I went installed ubuntu 8.10. I have a broadband connection stuck to a net gear router (I use to stream to my PS3). I want to know if this would be a breeze with Ultimate Edition too (I mean I did nothing, installed Ubuntu and next thing I was browsing!). This is a major concern for me
2. As for gaming, I currently own a somewhat outdated laptop with an intel graphics card (I know, most of the hard core gaming does not work with this). I wanted to know for this Ultimate Edition gamers edition is this enough? I am anyway planning to go a to a desktop soon, in that case what would be the recommended graphics card? Suggestions would be great.
3. Lastly (I know I said 2 but here goes another) - I use media tomb (for ps3 streaming) and rtorrent (a wonderful torrent client), I a assuming that I would be able to install and use them with Ultimate Edition too. This is just a safety question I guess.

I would be grateful if someone can clarify these things.

Thanks,
Cannon

Most hardware that worked with 8.10 should work with Ultimate. However, Ultimate has a newer kernel so there are no guarantees. If the live disc recognizes all your hardware then you are good to go. If not there usually is a work around to get most stuff to work.

Thanks, I think that covers qn 1 and 3 probably. Please help out with the graphics card recommendations. Thats very crucial for me to get the right one for my desktop and at the same time not burn too much cash on it.

Linux in general has better support for Nvidia and Intel graphics. ATI not as much(unless it is an old one). There are a few ATI experts around here so they should be able to help you out. There is a driver installer built into Ultimate that looks like this:
Just install the suggested driver and reboot. If it looks like this screenshot you won't need to install anything. Keep in mind, compiz fusion(the 3D desktop) will need at least 64 megs(probably 128 is reasonable-I never trust minimum requirements!!) of video ram to work at all.

Hi,
I am planning to buy the ASUS M2n-MX motherboard (http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3& ... odelmenu=1) that has the foll config:

M2N-MX
- Socket AM2 for AMD Athlon 64 /FX CPU
- Nvidia GeForce 6100/nForce 430
- 2000 / 1600 HyperTransport
- PCI Express X16
- SATA RAID 0,1,5,0+1
- MAX 4 SATA (3Gb/s) support Dual RAID
- Gb LAN
- Compliant with RoHS

Would the nVidia Ge Force 6100 be good for running all the games in Ultimate Edition? Please let me know.

Hi,
I am planning to get a desktop that has the foll config
AMD Athlon X2 5600+ Dual Core Processor
Asus M2N-MXA/V Ethernet Integrated Motherboard
This has a nvidia geforce 6100 graphics card, is that good enough for the games on Ultimate Edition 2.0? Please let me know.

Deate,
The nvidia link that you gave does not help much, it does not suggest anything or am I using it wrongly, I dont know?!

The integrated nVidia 6100/430 graphics card has some respectable numbers... 425MHz clock, 9.0 DricetX, 3.0 shader...and will run most games reasonably well with the cpu you plan to use...don't forget, if you want to upgrade, you have a PCIexpress slot, where you can add a better graphics card, if the integrated card isn't cutting it

Deate,
Thats precisely my point - if I can get a better integrated graphics card I might as well do it now rather than spend more money on a add on card. I would like to get it right the first time rather than worry about upgrades etc. Any suggestions for this?

Thanks,
Cannon
