Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

A/V for ubuntu??

Postby witblits1970 » Wed Apr 16, 2008 7:45 am

ive read that Linux is going to start receiving virus threats in the future? is this correct? hope not, as a result i tried to download AVG for Linux since i had no issues with AVG in my windlows days, but it failed to install. however at home it did, im using 1.7 on both boxes. when i tried to upgrade definitions at home it would not since i did not have the right permissions! so, how do i update definitions via terminal? i suppose im asking what is the command line i need to use? i know i don't HAVE to have an AV package to run Ubuntu im more wanting to learn more than anything else. thanks ;)

Mornin' ya'll...
Welcome onto Ultimate Edition there wit...ditto what Cowboy said. Most of what I've read about Linux (Ubuntu versions in particular) and virii come from those, like myself and a fresh newbie here in the Linux world) that are running Windows app's thru Wine. While any kind of attack is possible on any OS, history shows that the more popular OS's, and of course MS being at the top (for now anyway) are the ones most likely to get hit the hardest and most often. I believe it's thru Wine and the MS apps I use is the only way I would ever see a virus on my system. So for that reason only I run ClamAV. But when the same apps become available for Linux, which I'm sure we'll see in the near future, I'll remove the MS apps and Wine and ClamAV too. Just FYI, when running any MS apps and Wine, just don't run them under your "/" (root) and you'll have less to worry about. My understanding is that any virii coming in thru the apps would be kinda trapped there. I'm sure if anything I've mentioned above is misleading or wrong, one of the ol' Linux veterans here will set it straight.

SaddleTramp is spot-on.

The reason M$ has over 2000 viruses and Linux has less than 5 (low level)
Is because of the way Linux is set up with permissions.
Just like you can't change anything in your core without Root permission (your password)
neither can any viruses or spyware.

Like SaddleTramp said, Ultimate Edition comes with AV protection installed be default, to protect your M$ native apps and to protect the M$ side of a duel boot, not to protect Linux. (cause none is needed)

I deliberately launched a virus on my system day before yesterday, funny how wine handles things the virus replicated itself as multiple tasks 0dxdsdsds.exe etc. I did not even worry after all it "Assumed" I was running windows as most virii assume, what is the statement about the word "Assume"? It had zero effect on my system and actually allowed me to analyse the virus, without the worry of compromise (I could see dmesg results of what it's valiant attempts were).

Sure virus's will be written for *nix as it takes over the windows world. This is a long time from now and the way it will be handled will be much different then the windows counterpoint, things like this can be integrated right into the kernel something m$ would never conceive (a beautiful thing about open source). I do have to say this, it will slow down the beautiful world we live in now as we are carefree, I could if I so desired browse porn sites all day (king of virus's) and still have the same system the next day & spyware free.

I honestly only miss one thing from windows & that is games. I have started seeing a change in trends in that dept as well, you will see it in Ultimate Edition 1.8 Gamers. You will also see a change in trend as more & more people adopt *nix, the virus's will also come aboard.

What I wonder and this is a personal assumption (didn't we talk about assume?)... If I owned a company that sold anti-virus software, would it not be in my best interest to "make" or "pay" someone to write virus's? Well now welcome to the world of free software.... What gain is there?

Once again my 2 cents,

TheeMahn
