Ultimate installation problems (Quad Core) HELP!!

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

Yeah I figured tiring to install the O/S on another machine would do that. In windows you cant because the HAL (hardware application layer) wouldn't match up. Heck,I did a hardware upgrade (video card, hard drive and memory) on another machine and windows made me go through the "Windows Genuine Advantage" to re-register my O/S (20 min phone call).

What I was suggesting to use my other machine just to preformat the hard drive with ext3 before I try to install the O/S.

What I have attempted to do.

I've tried using a older pci-e card because I thought that may have been the problem.
Tried booting in different screen resolutions.
Reburnt my ISO at a slower speed and verification.
Tried to install the i386 version of Ubuntu.
Used F6 in safe mode and disabled PCI and ACPI, manually set my memory.

I have managed once to get it to start loading without the splash screen and noticed "kernel panic" errors.

My specs:

ASUS P5K3 DELUXE/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600
OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT OC Graphics Card
Western Digital - Raptor X 150GB Internal Hard Drive (O/S will be installed here)
Western Digital - 1TB Internal Hard Drive

I've spent 2 days searching for any help. Not much out there. My previous installations were flawless so I wasn't even expecting this many problems.

When I do get this up and running how much space should I plan on assigning to the /swap partition? I plan on using this as a HTPC and gaming.

I would really like not to having to install windows just to get this system up and running.

I cant be of any current help, but have a quad core in route currently in Cali, mine is not Intel (AMD Phenom 9600), but none the less will post what I do to get everything up to par. Please know for a fact Ultimate Edition 1.8 will support quad core out of the "box" as it will be built on a quad core. I had a similar problem back in the Ultimate Edition 1.2 era with dual core(bought a dual core and fixed it permanently), the situation will be resolved for you, hang tight should be here Wednesday.

Latest update. In my adventure in trying to install a O/S ive decided to go with the Mythbuntu 8.04 Beta. I'm trying to install in the safe mode (quite off) and I get to the point were it says "early unpacking intramfs", which just sits there. I left it run all night and it still cannot get beyond that point.

I think you had better try to install Ultimate 1.7(KDE-Gnome editon) once again. It is probably the most up to date distro there is right now. It has the best hardware recogition of the over 50 distros I have tried out in the past 2 months!! pch

Ok, I'm throughly convinced it's gotta be my board at this point! I even found a site to manually set my ram into the board. If anyone is interested:

I cant even get XP to install. So, I'm boxing it up and sending it back to newegg. I swear I've never had problems with an ASUS board. Anyone had success installing an Intel Quad Core with DDR3? I need a suggestion for a new mobo! I think four days of persistent trial and error is enough.

well that sucks that you werent able to get it going. i agree with you asus boards are usually pre solid. perhaps its not actually the board cpu combo. maybe you just ended up with a bad board. ive heard nothing but good things as far as that cpu & board combo goes so im thinking maybe theres jus sum wrong w/ the bopard. however if you would rather go w/ a diff manufacture i would suggest one of them new evga nvidia 790i boards. idk about linux compability tho as i dont kno anyone else that uses linux. no they arent cheap. around 250-275 i believe (you may find one cheaper tho). everybody i kno that has one loves them. im not sure what you paid for your board but if it was less than that i would try to exchange it first.

Which really sucks because they have been really solid boards, which I have used for 10 years. I have one in a machine thats overclocked thats been running for five years and no problems. Speaking of overclocking how well does the linux kernel accept overclocking?

Contacted newegg.com by phone I had a RMA, and a refund all in about 5 minutes. I was very surprised how easy it was. I was expecting at least a 45 minute call having to argue with a representative for the refund. Purchased a new board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813141009. Now I just have to hold my breath and hope for the best.
